Computer specs and Skyrim crashes

Hi!

 

I have very little knowledge in the way of hardware (I rely mostly on Google), so I'd appreciate it if you could give me some input as to how well my computer specs should be able to run Skyrim.

 

I recently upgraded my card from a Nvidia GTX 460 to an AMD 7870 due to frequent crashes and purple textures/stuttering. Re-installed Skyrim after several errors; after rebooting, the game could run on Ultra. I used to run it on Medium settings, but with textures lowered to Medium.

 

Oddly enough, the game still crashes on Ultra every 20 mins or so, even though the game's auto-detect places the settings at Ultra on first launch. When I shift it to High, it lasts a little longer, crashing to desktop silently every 30-40 minutes. On Medium, the intervals vary, but it sometimes crashes on loading. Textures occasionally appear purple, but it's rare.

 

This is also the case when I'm running Skyrim via Attk Lite, though the intervals between crashes are sometimes longer thanks to that awesome program.

 

I highly doubt it's a mod conflict. My FPS is steady in the 38-48 range. I'm running ENB v0.119, Realistic Lighting Overhaul and Beauty of Skyrim ENB, and I have no texture mods that affect scenery. These are the only mods I use that may result in performance loss, as far as I'm aware. Without Beauty of Skyrim ENB, my fps is between 55-60. The other large mods I have are Convenient Horses, Hair Packs from Oblivion, Ethereal Elven Overhaul, UNP, ACE, Coverwomen/Covereyes and Navetsea's skin textures. The rest are smaller ones (i.e. Immersive Armor/Weapons, clothing, etc.). I use BOSS and Wrye to determine load order.

 

Prior to using RLO, I used Climates of Tamriel together with Enhanced Lights and FX and Quietcool ENB - crashes were more frequent then, so I switched over to the combination I'm running now.

 

I've whittled it down to two things: either my CPU is too pathetic to run Skyrim, or my power cord is too weak (recommended power cord for AMD 7870 is 500W, but I only have a 450W one now), but I'm not sure which of it is right.

 

Computer specs:

Windows Vista 32-bit

Intel Core i5 650 @ 3.20 GHz

6GB RAM

AMD Radeon HD 7870 3GB

 

I'd prefer not to upgrade my CPU if possible, but I'm not sure if changing from a 450W power cord to the recommended 500W one for the graphics card will make a difference. I'd really like to run Climates of Tamriel properly on Skyrim without fear of random crashes. If anyone has some idea of what's causing the crashes, please do let me know. I'm pretty confused now, and I'd rather not blindly upgrade any more parts without more information.

The PSU wattage label is useless if you dont tell the specific brand/name of the PSU.

Good PSUs give more than they say in the label, POS-china PSUs give about 1/2 of what they say in the label.

 

Good 450W is more than enough for 7870.

 

You could also try enabling skyrim error logs to see if the problem lies with the mods. My Skyrim save got crushed with all the scripts that my installed/uninstalled mods left behind... Crashes when I go outside, and the error logs were insanely long. New save worked like a charm with 0 stuttering/crashes/etc.

 

Do you have the latest AMD drivers installed? Im using 13.2b3.

And you did properly remove the old nvidia drivers, rrrriiiight?

Okay, mine's a good PSU, so that shouldn't be the problem then. I'll try enabling logs and see what I get. And yes I did uninstall the old Nvidia drivers, wiped the Nvidia registry too.

 

I'm using 13.1 though, wasn't sure if I should use 13.2 since it's apparently beta. I'll try that.

Edit: Crash logs are the same every time. It has a lot to do with DLC quests it seems... but I have no idea how to read this at all. Pasting it here. Will a reinstall help?
