Custom Textures

Been searching for a while now, but I really can't find out how to do this.

I've modified a few .dds files to make new textures, and I wouldn't like to replace the old ones. However, after putting the .dds files where they should be in the data/textures/... folders, I can't figure out how to use them in the GECK.

I can't find them when I edit the model data when I try to add an alternate texture, and I really don't know where else they might be.

The new textures are for the Vault Sliding Doors. I've put them under "data/textures/dungeons/vault/" in .dds format.

Anyone able to help me out with this?

Now let's see if I remember this right.

If you want to alter the textures of an item using the GECK, you have to modify or make a new texture set entry that points to the new textures rather than the old ones. So basically navigate to the texture set subtree and make a new entry there and point the diffuse, normal etc. entries to the new texture files you have just made - once you are done redirecting the file paths, exit the window and make sure that you have a new texture set created.

You should now be able to pick the new texture set as "alternate" textures in the model inspection window. Double click the entry you want to replace the texture on and pick the newly created texture set - this will apply the texture from the files referenced in the texture set to that part.

Enjoy. :)

Can you give me a example of the folder sequence for a new texture how its suppose to look in the the directory? Also with Texture Sets what if the texture your going to make a new set off for your custom texture isn't there? Like mine is a floor plug from the Metro Mez, it's orangish rusted color ? there is no such thing that I've been able to find in the Texture Set's so I can redirect the set to my new one?

THxs for any help on this!

all you have to do is open GECK, scroll to misculanious/ texture sets, and make a new texture set from in the geck, you should see your textures.

I was confused about this myself this morning but these two articles helped me a lot.

Thxs Nerf Ninja for those articles, I yesterday through Trial and Error finally came upon the solutions, also when retexturing a existing model, One thing I found out and haven't found any other ways to do this but if you want theold texture back that came with the model just type in the model ID at the top there in that Form ID window and it will bring back theold texture.or just click on the old one when you make your alternate texture , I believe that wrked also.

this guy explains it pretty well

as for the not being able find the art and sound.. that's strange.

I had a similar issue once tho, where I thought the art and sound disappeared,

but the art and sound tab actually just moved down the window.

I have modded my own version of the sliding door (I yanked the numbers off of it) and the correct spot for the texture is at "data/textures/dungeons/vault/doors/mydoortexture.dds"

Then you just pop it into the GECK as a new texture set and attach the texture set to a copy of the sliding door mesh with a new form ID.

Hope this helps
