bben46
When you started Oblivion the first time after reloading you should get a message about checking your graphics card, then it should identify the card and show you what resolution it selected for it. usually a low resolution. On mine, I get 'unable to identify graphics card' and a setting or 640x800. Then I have to go into the settings and change the values to something usable. Using a Nvida 7600GT, so it's a trade off between how good it looks and how good it plays. Here is a link to one: http://majorgeeks.com/Fresh_Diagnose_d440.htmlThe site, majorgeeks.com has more and different diagnostic programs. many are freeware, but some are for pay so watch what you are downloading. If your card can display anything else in the resolution you want, it should at least try to work in Oblivion with that resolution. If there is a problem, it could be a video ram issue. there are test programs that will run a test on your video ram They will report how much video ram is on your card and how well it works. if it reports less than you card has, that could be your problem. tyreil829
could a fautly motherboard cause a problem like this?
bben46
It's possible, but the most likely culprit is the video board. Usually if there is a problem with the motherboard it shows up in other places too. Like in ports not working, USB not working right.

bben46
Even with a bug a total uninstall, including removing all oblivion related content, renaming and moving the entire /data folder, renaming and moving the entire Documents and Settings\...\Oblivion folder, (including the Oblivion.ini file) deleting the entire \Oblivion (or \Bethesda\Oblivion folder. Then removing all Oblivion references from the Windows Directory (MUST be done while oblivion does not exist anywhere on your computer) Then a full reinstall of ONLY the vanilla game should at least allow the vanilla version to work. Unless you do have a weird hardware problem with your video. If running a registry cleaner does not clean out the Oblivion References in the registry, I really don't like advising people to edit the registry because a mistake here can make your entire computer unusable. If you don't have a registry backup, you will have to reinstall Windows to recover. That's why I recommend ccleaner. It may not be the most thorough registry cleaner, but it is likely the safest. Be sure you have uninstalled Oblivion using the original disk, Then do a cold reboot of the computer - this allows the dependencies of the registry entries to be broken and makes them into orphans ( entries with no program associated) This will allow a registry cleaner program to find and remove them. After you have run the ccleaner (or some other registry cleaner- be sure to select remove orphan references, ccleaner does that automatically) Again, you must reboot after running the registry cleaner to complete the cleaning process. Use the regedit command and search the registry to be sure the reference: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion Is no longer present. If it is still there, and you feel lucky (95% probability of nothing bad happening) go ahead and delete that one line only. You can search the registry for other references with the word Oblivion and delete them also. Then exit and save the registry. Then reboot. Here is the link to the uninstall procedure on the official Bethesda site. See post #6 but it might be good to read the entire thread anyway. Lots of good advice there.http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.ph...p;#entry8103714
