Problem with Nifconvert and Chunkmerge: While trying to convert a cust

I've been using Chunkmerge and Nifconvert, [for converting custom models to Skyrim Nif Format and adding collision], for 2 whole weeks now.

The whole time it was working flawlessly. Now, whenever I set everything up, [when I click convert, in the program], the program freezes then says:

TODO: < Description > an unexpected error has occurred. Shutting down.

^ then pressing ok, it exits Nifconvert or Chunkmerge.

I have no idea why it started doing this nor can I fix it. I've cleaned up my computer. I've re-downloaded the program. I have done everything I can think of and it still does it.

Bumping this thread as i have the same problem with Nifconvert

The latest version didnt work at all, just gave me the error from the first attempt.

So i had been using the previous version with no problems, untill it started giving me the same error as chaosgod, for no apparent reason.

Been googling about, but cant see much info.

Hopefully someone here knows :)

As general advice, when referring to programs for help, please state which version you are working.

NifUtils has been accepted into the Niftools banner.

Here is current tutorial for the latest stable version - http://niftools.sourceforge.net/wiki/Skyrim/Adding_Collision_Mesh_using_ChunkMerge

The Blender-to-Skyrim Tutorial on TESA has a section about NifUtils - http://tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/topic/5541-3d-craftworks-from-blender-to-skyrim/?p=83874

Again without know which version you are using, somewhat limited in being able to help.

There is also a version in beta, renamed to NifUtilSuite as it will contain various tools, model viewer, etc. - http://niftools.sourceforge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=4128

The tutorial on the niftools wiki will be updated soon to reflect the changes introduced in this new version.

I also had Nifconvert freezing up on me. If uninstalling Nifskope and NifUtilsSuite and then reinstalling them to their default directories still does not work here are some ideas you might consider:

  • Unpack all textures and all meshes from the skyrim BSA files.
  • Some templates (from your skyrim vanilla meshes) will crash NifConvert. For example, if you are using a daedricdagger.nif as a template, and it's not working, then try broom.nif (found in \meshes\clutter\common). Broom, sword, don't worry about it, experiment with other meshes for a template -- for me this was the pivotal point in solving the problem. But if that, in itself, does not work then time to get anal...
  • Load NifUtilsSuite.xml in notepad and check all the paths for accuracy. Edit, save. Alternately, delete NifUtilsSuite.xml and then run the exe file and it will take you through the initial setup like you had never used it before. When specifying the textures path, don't go any deeper than Skyrim's Data folder. When it scans, it should find over a thousand textures.
  • Confirm your model integrity: I'm using Blender 2.49b and exporting my nif using the Morrowind setting -- but this setting may not hit you with certain errors that the Fallout 3 setting will pick up, So if you are using Blender, do a test export using the FO3 option and if it is clean, then go back to the Morrowind option -- and while you're there, if not already done, try selecting the button "Export Geometry Only (.nif)" option.
  • I digress here but: while your in blender, in the User Settings window, make sure the texture folder is pointing to a folder in skyrim's textures and not the default or some custom folder where you store your project. Think: where is the final destination going to be when you create you're plugin (with creation kit). It's got to be in skyrim. When you create your .dds files, that is where you should lay your egg.
  • Last resort: Backup your registry unless you are at home with hacks like this. If you're using windows, run REGEDIT from the startbutton at the absolute lower left corner of the desktop. Scroll down to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER> Software> NifTools> NifSkope-1.1.0> or whatever version of NifSkope your using, just find the one with all the data in it. Look at the path entries and confirm their accuracy. For me, the "last texture path" was using the delimiters "/" where it should have been "\". At your own risk, double click on it and delete the path so that it is now a blank entry.

I know what it's like to bleed on the battlefield of trying to get your model into skyrim. I share your pain. Don't give up... take a break, rest, run around, come back another day. Remember, what one modeller can do, so can you -- persist and persevere. Anger closes your intuition and freedom of thought -- so if you go down that nasty path, stop working and do what it takes to relax and rebalance. Happy modding.
