Maquissar
Heart of Darkness? Oh... the horror! ;)Seriously, I read it and liked it, but not enough to say it is the best piece of literature ever published... but I might have to read it again, because maybe it'smore complex than I first thought. However... if you want something INTRICATEand COMPLEX read Joyce's Ulysses... say goodbye to your brain before youstart reading it though!
Malchik
Joseph Conrad? I don't think I would say he was the writer of the greatest piece of fiction although there is something terrifying about the ending of Heart of Darkness. There's not really a great deal of 'roundness' in his characters as a whole IMO and his women are a bit unbelievable. Good with the sea and ships! I don't know how to judge 'the greatest'. I can talk of my favourites, but that isn't the same thing at all. From the point of view of subtlety I would point to Henry James but his half page sentences can be devilishly hard to read. I couldn't call him the 'greatest' but for those who have patience many of his books are very good. (A couple are terrible!)

There's nobody that could even approach his level of style or theological philosophy.William Gibson and Orson Scott Card pretty much redefined sci-fi in the 80's. OSC, Willy G. and China Mieville are the only three writers to have had any original ideas in the past twenty-five years.
Grey-Fox
ha! well the only reason I thinks its the best is because its soo incredible complicated and so incredibly short. As for the most enjoyable.... i quite like the weel of time series hehe but then... I kinda stopped at book 3 because I forgot the characters after a year of no reading the books
DreamOfTheRood
Oh, that's okay. You can pick up on the current book and not have missed very much. Here, I'll fill you in. Rand is a pimp; pretty much everyone thinks he's either the coolest guy ever or the end of the world. Mat is quickly going nuts. He constantly hears ringing bells and dice rolling around. Oh, and he's banging some chick that's hotter than Monica Bellucci.Perrin still has a really gay name and thinks very slowly, but he's also kind of the de facto leader of his hometown. He's banging Faile, but some other chick wants his body. Every once in a while, some Trollocs show up and wisely suggest a three-way, but Perrin punches them into primary colors. Rand got together a group of dudes who can use the Force after he did something or other to unseal the male side of the Force with a bowl. And, seriously, he's a pimp. In the film version, I hear they're planning on bringing 50 in to play Asmodean just so he can rap "P.I.M.P" whenever Rand's around.Oh, and there's some uppity aristocrat chick who's trying to make Rand feel the Force or some crap, but she's failing, because he's all like, "I'm fiercely independent." Then, Mat's all like, "I got soul, but I'm not a soldier." Even though he is, in fact, the resurrected/WOT'ed soul of some uber-general. Oh, and he pretty much won some battle by letting that resurrected/WOT'ed soul take over his mind for a while. The Dark One got psycho-mad when Rand killed two of his assassins, so he resurrected them, but he kinda buggered up, because he switched their genders. A bunch of good and bad guys got punched apart. I think that naked Grienndhaeaeaealll chick was one of them. Robert Jordan continued to take well-known legends and misspell them to create his characters. Expect to see Michael Bayowhulph and Jhonhe of Arkche. So, now you can go read book 258 or whatever it is.
