[LE] NPC houses/Spouse houses

I haven't had any luck finding answers for this question but what is it that makes an npc home also your home once you marry said npc? Is it a script or is it a whole different cell? I'm working on improving a cell of one of the base game marriage candidates (Balimund) . I don't want to break him or his shop, but I don't know how the ownership changes. Can I just load up the version I remade as player owned or will that break his inventory?

Each cell has an owner option. If it's not used no one owns the area. So to answer your question it would be via script and via preset cells depending on where or what it is. When I make a home mod I set that option to the player. Some hold back that option until you buy the home. In the 1st case it would be preset the ladder would be done via script. As for your second question. Pretty sure you can change cell ownership without problems. Maybe not the bed ... If I was you I'd test it out. When you get married they become a type of follower (with a few different options) and you as the player own the house they can still sleep in the bed and such because they are in your faction.

So I fooled around with it, set cell ownership to player and put in a double bed for balimund and everything seemed to work great until I married him, then he left the temple and went to the woods where the Falkreath BYOH location is, and just stood there. This could be because i picked the "your house" option but it wasn't his house according to the flag so I guess he just went with the default second option? I hadn't had the chance to see if his merchants chest was still his but all together it might work out better if the house was modded but remained in the same faction and ownership properties as it was before.

Also I made a duplicate cell before I started working on overhauling the house and sent the door teleport to that cell instead, which just put two balimunds and his apprentice in the game LOL

Well if this is an ingame predefined shop. Myself I wouldn't mess with it at all. There may be quests tied to the npcs or in the location you might mess up. What he did sounds more than odd ... Anyways try just adding him to your faction and see how that works out. I'm pretty sure when you marry a npc they do become apart of your faction. Have you ever tried to just marry him and see what happens then.

I'm not sure how to proceed here. So in that case I'd look for a mod this is doing what I am looking to do and study it.

edit: Also there is mods that change how followers act. like Amazing follower tweaks. In that mod there is an option to set the npcs home. So this can be done ...
