Transferring mods from disc install to steam

So I did the one thing many gamers fear during a move from
one place to another. I lost my Oblivion GOTY, disc 1(still have disc 2, box,
map, and the booklet). I’ve trashed my
place looking for the disc for the last couple of days. Is it possible if I download Oblivion GOTY
off of Steam that I could move my mods over to the steam copy without killing
myself or the game? I don’t care if my previous saves transfer, I just want to
keep the mods.

Anything would help

I am very sorry to hear that, and I feel that I know what you are going through.

I've lost my disc 1 too (no lie). And I'm planning for a massive mod to help me maintain sanity until I get a new case to finally start working on it.

I'm pretty sure you find it eventually, if not, you can get it from the internet... It is alot cheaper nowadays! :)

The last time I lost my disk I found it in the disk drive of my laptop http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f351/charonn0/ohgeez-1.gif - My old laptop cannot even read the Oblivion disk. Look in all of the disk & DVD drives - including that blu ray movie player & any other device that will take a DVD, kids will put any disk in any drive. Then look in your music and movie boxes as well as the game boxes. Parents, significant others and guests will put a disk in the first empty box they find when cleaning up.

You can make a backup of your data folder - copy it to a new folder. then after you have the new version running properly - rename the data folder to something like original_Data, and copy the one from your game in it's place - That still does not get OBSE and anything that was in the game folder though those still may have to be reinstalled - just look in the game folder to see what is there and make copies of all of the OBSE files & other stuff that you have added over time.

You can do the same with your save games and ini file. Make a backup of the save game folder and the ini file.

Then after your game is working and after you have a first save (important) make a backup of the new Saves folder and replace the saves folder with the one from your old install. If you are not using the same computer, you should NOT use the old Oblivion.ini file as it is dependent on the actual hardware in your computer.
