Modding Help

I am having a extremely hard time applying a texture mod. I am kinda new to computer games and modding. Is there anything like a Youtube video that goes over the exact way to apply a mod. I tried reading the readme files that come with the mod but it never works. I am running it on a MacBook Pro with Vista 32 Bit installed on the other partition. I download the file, go to my downloads, i unzip them using 7-zip, but after that i get very confused. There should be a guide for modding newbies. I have a lot of games i wanna mod out like, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, The Witcher, Oblivion, Dead Space, Tomb Raider Underworld.
