Wings on a Body...?

I don't know what exactly I am doing. I have an obj file of wings and i'm trying to attach them to the upperbody of the upperbody.nif file for males.

I'm using nifSkope and poser 7. In poser i imported the wings and imported an entire upperbody nif. I remembered that I had to import and change each body part one at a time just like a weapon (it made sense from the tutorial on here). I exported the upperbody part "arms [0]" from the nif file (which is the torso).

Importing it back into poser, the torso was HUGE. Three times larger than the import with the entire body. Anyways I figure I should not touch the torso's size and figured it would be sorted out in nifskope. I resized and realigned the wings to the big torso model and exported them as a welded obj.

i open a new window in nifskope, import the new torso with wings and I copy the NiTriShapeData. I paste the data over the original file's NiTriShapeData and the torso on it disappears. I can find no trace of the new model anywhere.

What am I doing wrong?

(Also, blender is a pain to work with but, my 3ds max trial is over and I'm not shelling out 3k for just making models. Got recommendations for another 3d program I could use?)

*On a side note, I took a break from that and went on and downloaded the skeleton file and modded it for the wings too.
