Need help with mods

I have recently reinstalled oblivion and am trying to get a good collection of mods going but I am having a LOT of issues. First of all, I'm not sure how HGEC works at all. When I go into the files I download there's only meshes, aren't their usually textures that go along with the mesh? Then, I go in game and the mesh doesn't even appear to be taking effect. Then, I found a skin texture mod and thought maybe, even though it is NOT in the description you HAVE to use the mesh mod and the texture mod together, so i tried that, nothing changed. All the characters are still as ugly as ever.

Now I'm thinking I need a good race mod that comes nude, but isn't there also a mod that skips the part where the dark elf mentions your race that you are required to have for any race mods? I can't find that ANYWHERE on the nexus! And even without that, I tired a race mod or two and still it doesn't even appear in the list of race in character creation and I know it was checked.

Please, someone just help me out here, I have been caused so much stress by this. Skyrim mods are so much easier T-T.

Okay, SO I have the mesh i want working but i simply can not get the textures for my body and face working! It's like they don't even exist and it's kinda irritating me. I got the original EC everything working, then I used that, got the HGEC mesh i wanted working, and then tried to get the texture right but i can't figure it out. In all the mods I've tried they simply have Imperials, Orcs, and Dark elves textures, and then a few what i assume to be custom races, and even in the files their all "femalefoot" stuff. I simply don't understand, is it supposed to be like that?

Yup. It's supposed to be like that. please remember the most of the Oblivion mods came out long before the NMM, and many just weren't uploaded with their file structure ready to be used by NMM. So, you will have to learn a bit about file structure to use them. Download manually. If the file structure is compatible, you can use NMM to install from a file. If not you will have to do it yourself.

Read the readme for the mod, look for hints that it may not be in a simple esp - meshes - textures format. If the install instruction is something like "extract directly into data folder" it is in the NMM useable format. Others will say 'extract into the Oblivion folder'. When they say extract, they mean use a unzipping program such as 7-zip or Winrar and unzip it directly into that location.

If you extract a folder that is supposed to be dropped into the Oblivion folder into the data folder, it will create a new data folder inside the data folder ( Oblivion\data\data ) Just delete that extra data folder and extract that one into the Oblivion folder

Otherwise, unzip it into a separate folder - I always create a special folder for each mod and unzip it there. Then copy each part to be installed into the proper folder. Usually you can just copy most esp, mesh and texture folders from the mod directly into the data folder and the windows file structure will know to put them into the proper sub folder.

If there are multiple options, be sure to use only the one you want - these are usually multiple esp files. Use ONE body mod only. Use ONE skin texture only.

Always allow overwriting - it doesn't really overwrite anything unless it has the exact same name (rare) instead it appends the new files into the folder with the older ones.

One common problem I have seen often with body mods is the face is not a part of the body - it is separate. and is a different mod. So don't expect the face you see in the pics if all you installed was the body. The only way to see if the body mod is working is to strip an NPC as clothing will often hide the body shape. - simplest - kill an NPC - take all clothing & check the body.

uhm..not sure what exactly you're trying to get, I installed my hgec manually as mentionned above - just downloaded the main file here http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/15802 , gone through all the directories till i got to a "meshes" or "textures" directory in the body type i wanted (textures are in "common") and copied what was inside into my oblivion/data/meshes or textures directory respecitvely

as mentionned that won't make your characters nor npcs any prettier. For your own character you need to set all the face parameters right or get a savegame from someone who made a pretty character and use something like face exchange lite (http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/7808). For npcs you'll need some kind of overhaul mods (I myself use Tibs attractive female npcs: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/9721 not a masterpiece, but did enough for me).

As for the dark elf and custom races, there is the custom race fix: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/1815 or you can try out some "alternative start" mods to avoid him
