Deleted4036430User
Hey guys, I've fully completed a mod which adds Bill from Left 4 Dead to the game, as a companion. It's all fully voiced using sound files from Left 4 Dead 2. I was literally about to publish when I came to the permission/credits section, and I realised I might get in trouble for using Left 4 Dead 2 files without permission from Valve. If anyone (most likely the mods) knows any more about this please tell me, I've got the mod right here and ready to publish, but I don't want to get banned or start trouble with Valve (of all people!) over copyrights and permission. TheVampireDante
Using those files without permission is actually illegal, it's a copyright violation. So I wouldn't go uploading anything. You'd either have to gain permission, or re-record the voice yourself (and I mean by yourself voicing it), not just holding a mic to something playing the original sounds - something some people thing qualifies as "ok". Xaranth
If you are using content created or owned by someone else (In this case Valve) in your mod, you must have explicit permission from the owner (Which is not necessarily the creator) of that content to publish it. So, yes, you would get in trouble without explicit permission, and note that in these cases the burden of proof falls on you. The owner does not have to provide proof that they didn't give permission, you have to prove that you did get permission.
