Replace Vanilla Armor With Custom?

Hey everyone :)

I recently reinstalled DAO and I was wondering, is it possible to switch a vanilla armor with one of a custom design?

There's so many great mods with custom armors and weapons and it would be so cool to be able to integrate them into the game in a larger context

Thanks in advance for any replies on the matter

Almost "custom armour" (and weapons, and other items) are designed to be integrated directly with the vanilla game.

Find the ones you like, ("Files > Categories > Armor" currently has 145 for DAO) then read and follow the authors' Descriptions/Installation instructions, and have fun!

Thanks for the reply

But that's not exactly what I meant, I was thinking more in the lines of direct replacers for vanilla armors, just for an example, let's take one of the light armors and then replacing it with something like "Isabella"'s armor from the Kirkwall Exports http://dragonage.nexusmods.com/mods/3098, or the vanilla Templar armor with the Templar armor from the same project

While it is totally possible to replace a specific vanilla item with a modded version (simply by using the exact same filename for the one in your override folder) both the ones you mention are DA2 mods.

BioWare changed the body and face models between the two games, so none of the DA2 items can be used directly in DAO.

Actually the armors in that mod are legally ported models, from DA2 to DAO

Anyway, I just used those as an example, but I actually tried replacing the Chantry robe with the "Sloth Demon Robe" from the "Hsli Sexy mage robes" http://dragonage.nexusmods.com/mods/1342, but that didn't work at all, they simply just showed up invisible, which normally indicates that the armor is incompatible with either race or gender, which was not the case :P

Are there several files that needs to be replaced, or is the .msh file the only one needed?

Oh yeah, "Kirkwall Exports"!

Back you your question. Several. the .msh is the "mesh" (model, wireframe) of an item. You still need the "texture", (surface, skin) and if it has motion of its own (and I think robes do) there may be more files that handle "bone weighting" and other animation elements.

The bottom line is that it's totally possible to replace a vanilla item with a custom one. But if you already have a way to get the custom item into the game, why bother?

[EDIT: I believe The Winter Forge mod allows you re-make vanilla items to match the look and specs of custom ones, as long as you already have both in your inventory to work with. But while I've used it a bit, it's tricky and I never did much with it. There is a separate download for TWF User's Manual because so many people were having difficulty.]

Yea I thought it might be something like that, modding Fallout and TES is just so much simpler :P

Because I want the world NPCs to wear cooler gear than they normally do

Yea I like that mod, spend hours having fun with that one the last time I had the game installed
