Capncrass
I've been looking for a lightweight, standalone FPS limiter and have had no success. MSI Afterburner works but bogs down load times something fierce, I don't want to pay full program price to use a single feature of DXTory (nor do I want to put up with being nagged to buy it every time I start -and- shut down the trial), and both have a ton of features I have no interest in; all I want is a FPS limiter. I have an ATI card, so Nvidia Inspector is out. I did find one for Microsoft Flight Simulator 10 (>> Install/Use Instruction Link <<) that looks to be what I want. The actual download site is in French, or I'd link directly there rather than a forum post. There's a direct link to the download in the second post in that thread. So, would it be feasible (or even possible) to get something like that working for Skyrim/SkSE/ATTK? Edited February 25, 2013 by Capncrass
blove
RadeonPro Technology Preview has that feature.
Capncrass
Thanks. It's still a hell of a lot more program than I'd like, but I'll check it out. Edit to add: Just tried it, and it suffers from the same problem as MSI Afterburner; load times go from a few seconds to well over a minute when the limiter is turned on. blove
Hmm, I have used the Dynamic Framerate Control in Radeon Pro Preview before without noticing any adverse effect, but currently only use the program for ambient occlusion.
Phegor
Why don't you use VSync?
Capncrass
Hmm, I have used the Dynamic Framerate Control in Radeon Pro Preview before without noticing any adverse effect, but currently only use the program for ambient occlusion. It doesn't seem to be a very common problem. I've seen a few other people mention it, but nothing definitive about why it happens or if it's avoidable. That's the main reason I'm looking for a standalone; was hoping that it was one of the other features of those programs (OSD, maybe) that was causing the problem. Why don't you use VSync? I'm looking to cap my FPS at 30, so VSync wouldn't help.
Phegor
Okay, so that's the case. Try Bandicam, as far as I remember there's option to limit your FPS when you're not recording.By the way, what's the point to limit your FPS to 30 on a, well, high-end PC (you said something about few seconds loading times)? Yeah why would you want to limit your FPS? I mean the high your FPS the smoother the game runs. If anything mess with your graphics settings to get the desired FPS. Capncrass
I'll check out Bandicam. As for why: My PC is far from high end. With my current mod loadout and settings, I'm typically getting ~50 FPS, with spikes to 60 and dips to around 30. 28 is the lowest I've seen it go in normal gameplay. A constant 30 FPS feels way smoother to me than spiking from 30-60, so that's the main reason I want to limit it to 30. I also discovered (while trying Afterburner's limiter) that my graphics card is getting uncomfortably hot with the game uncapped (95 C or so), but stayed around 85 C with it capped at 30. Load times are usually in the neighborhood of 10 seconds. With both MSI and RadeonPro they were long enough that I force-closed the game on several occasions, as I wasn't sure if it had locked up or not. Earlier I mentioned "well over a minute", but it wouldn't surprise me if it were closer to 3. I got coffee and made a sandwich during one of them. DXtory has the same problem, but it only increases them by 10-20 seconds, so it's tolerable.
Phegor
Holy crap, 95 C it's damn hot, did you checked if the fan (or other source of cooling) is working properly? Also, I suggest you using Game Booster or software similiar to this, to reduce the OS impact on game (the graphical effects of Windows UI hits hard the game performance).
