Continuous oblivion crashes..please help.

I have a couple of mods installed which work fine and i use OBSE, but frequently oblivion crashes with the window "Oblivion has encountered a problem and needs to close." When that happens I usually restart my computer (it does not allow me to move my cursor so i have to shut down the computer by using ctrl+alt+delete) and go to the hard drive © and I find that my hard drive space has decreased by one gigabyte. My computer is running on windows vista, and im playing on high quality but i dont know if that has anything to do with the problem. Im not sure if there is a solution to this problem but help on the matter would be much appreciated.

Crashes can be caused by many things. But that losing a gig every time could eat up a hard drive in a hurry. Try running the disk clean up program to see if it gets some back. If it does, then be sure to do a defrag. I also recommend a registry cleaner such as the free ccleaner.

Crashes are not uncommon when playing Oblivion. The most common causes are things like the programs running in the background. xfire, antivirus scanner, anything that needs to call home (use the internet), internet update programs, microsoft indexing service. in short anything besides Oblivion that is running at the same time.

Defraging regularly helps sometimes.

Thanks for the help ill be sure to try that, the main problem im trying to fix is the loss of disk space. Sorry to ask but im not very smart with computers i know a couple of things but im not sure how to defrag, if you could post a link or a short description then that would be great.

Both the defrag and disk cleanup are located in system tools. To get there click on start (the one in the lower left corner of your desktop screen)

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools. Then run the disk cleanup first.

It should find any fragments that were left behind by the crashes and recover them. Along with allowing you to get rid of some other space wasting stuff. Be sure and select recycle bin and temporary files.

Run the scandisk. again click on start, this time click on run. in the box that opens type scandisk and hit enter.

Follow the directions.

Any files that it finds with na,es like 00001.chk, 00002.chk should be erased to recover the space.

If this doesn't recover you lost disk space I will come up with another solution.

After the clean up, and scandisk, run the defrag, also located in the system tools to consolidate your files. This helps with crashes.
