VyraalAnduin
Hey all, first post here so i kind of have no idea what im doing, but since skyrim came out, the dragons have just /bugged/ me. Namely their complete lack of a propatagium, the NECESSARY membrane connecting the wrist to the shoulder (that is VERY often overlooked in games and such), and the tiny membrane connecting the actual wing to the body. Below is a really crappy laptop touch pad drawn approximation of what these creatures would need to be able to take flight, based on the revered dragon because i couldn't find another base in this position. I would attempt to model this myself, but my computer will not download the right software for some stupid reason or another. http://oi45.tinypic.com/300g0zm.jpg
Urwy
While i think the added embrane definitely makes the dragons look more badass, i can't help but remember a statement i once read that implied the dragons using both their wings, and magic to actually fly. Hence the small wings being able to carry them. While i personally don't mind accepting that statement as actual explanation, i can understand that not everyone agrees with it. Believe i've found it. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:King_EdwardIts close to the bottom of the page."Moraelyn asked with a smile, "All right then, I've always wantedto know this - considering the shape of your mouth and teeth, how do dragons manage to speak the humanoid languages so clearly?"Akatosh paused, and then carefully responded, "Why, in much the same way that we can fly, even though our wings are notnaturally strong enough to support such heavy torsos."Thatdoesn't say a thing about stubby wings. It says their wings aren'tstrong enough to support their huge torsos. It's like if birds didn'thave pockets in their bones. They would weigh too much. You aremaking the assumption that they must be totally natural, whereas thebook made it pretty clear that they magic plays a big part with dragons. The question "How can you speak humanoid languages so clearly", despiteshape of their mouth and teeth, and then the answer "the same way wefly", clearly implies magic, because the second answer corresponds tothe first question. They must speak using magic (how else would theyspeak?), so they must also FLY with magic (at least partially).Dragons ARE magical creatures. It could easily be a combination of magic and nature, considering their magical nature! http://www.gameskyrim.com/images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gifInaddition, recall that King Edward XII is simply a book written by anauthor of Tamriel. Many books have been wrong before, mostly books thataren't strictly research books. We don't expect a Tom Clancy novel to berepresentative of how our world actually works, so we definitelyshouldn't trust a drama book to be representative of how Tamriel reallyworks. But like i said, i'd commend the person to implement these larger membranes for the improved looks, not the attached explanation for their flying technique. =)
VyraalAnduin
That actually is awesome, id never played daggerfall so i would never have known, but i still really like the idea for those like me who are real sticklers for realism, and dont/didnt know about the magic. But seriously, thanks for bringing this page to my attention, gotta read it aaaaaaall now!
