How do I make textures for weapons?

I'm pretty new to modding. I've taught myself about textures, .dds, bgsm files and normal, diffuse, specular maps. With the help of a mod author I've understood and managed to replace the textures for a few armor mods. I've done this in a very basic manner though. I've taken my textures, zipped them up and had vortex deploy them which then overwrote the original mod.

 

Weapon mods seem to be a completely different beast and I've hit a wall with them. They all seem to be BA2 files which seem to be completely self contained meaning the above method won't work for texture replacement for weapon mods. I've cracked open the BA2 with BAE, edited the UV maps to make my own skin but now I have no idea how to apply them to the mod. I'd like to do it properly and have my texture be a selectable skin at the weapons workbench like lots of mod authors do but I have no idea how to do that.

 

I've google it and found almost nothing on the topic. All texture replacement tutorials are for armors, I think they're called material swaps, or for basic texture replacements like pictures. I've even looked through the mod tutorial list in this forum. A couple of those videos aren't available anymore btw mods.

 

Can someone please either point in the direction of a tutorial or help me a little? Any help would be appreciated.
