I have a set of help files for people new to mods. They include downloading, extracting (unzipping) installing and activating mods. I have included a sample mod to practice on and instructions for installing and using 7-zip. If you are interested, click on the highlighted link below to be taken to the site where they are kept. I recommend starting with #1 and working your way through them.

If the mod has a meshes folder, copy that meshes folder into the \data folder. After that any new mod with its own meshes folder will use that one if it is copied into the \data folder. You will get a message saying it will overwrite files, actually it appends to the folder and adds the new stuff without overwriting anything (unless it has exactly the same name - very rare)

Do the same with texture folders, sounds folders and any others.

No, you have to learn how to do it yourself.

Meshes are nif files and textures are dds.

The most common problem is an extra folder stuck in the middle

Example: a mod named xyz. it has the mod itself, named xyz.esp that is the actual mod. without it you have nothing. it goes in the \data folder

Then there are 2 other folders in the xyx.7z (zipped file) named meshes and textures

If you copy them directly into the \data folder they should automatically go into the \data\meshes as a new folder named xyz so you will have Oblivion\data\meshes\xyz\the nif files and Oblivion\data\textures\xyz\the dds files.

Look for Oblivion\data\xyz that is the most common mistake I see. the xyz folder is in the data folder where it doesn't belong. If you see this, the easiest fix is to MOVE the meshes folder from that xyz folder directly into the \data folder.

it will give the warning about overwriting, answer yes. do the same with the textures folder. and if there are any other folders in it, do them also. There may be some other files, such as a readme or text or jpg files, they don't matter. just leave them where they are.
