Legacy of the Dragonborn Dark Face Bug

Hi there,

I did some digging and found minimal discussion on this in particular so I hoped it would be alright to ask the community for some tips as I've tried just about everything I can think of.

I'm running into the dark face/face gen/etc. issue that's been discussed at length in other arenas, however, When checking most NPCs in console mode the reference # for LotD is often what I find.

I've tried the CK F4 strategy and searched out every patch I could find. I don't trust myself to mess with SEEdit.

Admittedly I am on Vortex and new to modding so my knowledge of playing with load order is very minimal and I've heard that many people prefer MO2 for this purpose. I've already got everything set up in Vortex however at this point.

Any help would be tremendously appreciated, I've tried every workaround I could think of in the past two days and I've finally decided to ask for help.

I've attached a .txt with the current load order.

Thank you in advance.

Forget about the "F4 strategy". Black faces are usually load order issues. Re-exporting facegen data will only mess up face geometry.

Get your load order straight. Indeed SSEEdit is the best tool for this. Open your whole load order in SSEEdit. Search for the NPCs that have dark faces and see, what mods affect them. This is just "looking up", you don't save, you don't change anything. So this is safe, even if you're not familiar with SSEEdit.

Once you know which mods affect the black faced NPCs, re-arrange your load order. Make sure that the mod responsible for the NPC's appearance is loaded AFTER everything else that changes these NPCs.

In many cases, this will already solve the problem.

If it doesn't, create a bashed patch with "Wrye Bash". Make sure to check the "actors" box before creating the bashed patch. This always solved black face issues for me.

EDIT: This has nothing to do with MO2 or Vortex. Both are good an powerful mod managers. Vortex can do (almost) everything MO2 can.
