lostinmymind
I absolutely adore Mass Effect's cover system-I hadn't played GoW so I can't comment on that though. Problem is, cover systems are hard to implement.. Vegas 2, anyone? you'd sit behind cover and watch your guy get his elbow/shoulder blown off because the game screwed up placement/made it hard to get out of cover and behind something else. I'm used to the old "cover" system of hide behind whatever you see, so meh. Lean/prone would be awesome, especially with mods like Pelin's Sniper Overhaul. neok182
yea i'd settle for a lean/prone mod. probably require FOSE though. don't really like that thing much. i like my LIVE.
DigitalEternal
+1 here, the lack of being able to take cover was one of the things i didnt like about fallout 3, for what its worth you might as well just stand there and take the hits, crouching behind stuff is a wate of time because its just a pain to try and shoot from that, with GOW and mass effect (and a ton of other games for that matter) you can quickly lean out from behind over aim and shoot. Anyways, im not a modder so i dont know how dificult this owuld be but i honestly dont think it would take an engine re-write
lostinmymind
FOSE is the future, so get used to it, punk :D And yeah, currently taking cover doesn't do much in an all-out firefight, although with creative use of sneak+mines+ selecting proper cover, you can do some serious damage :P I'm using MMM increased increased and a balance overhaul that makes weapons actually hurt like a mother-still, nothing so staisfying as getting a dozen raiders to run right into a couple plasma mines :D
neok182
lol yea i know. just wish that all the mods that require FOSE were possible without it. i'll probably just suck it up and install it, but after all the bethesda DLC comes out. i want my achievements lol. skojolt
In no way whatsoever does this require a game engine rewrite, nor anything even vaguely similar. The animation needs to be created though along with a dummy object/npc that aims from a different origin. Foss could be used for a new keybind, or cover objects could be activated to start the animation. Leaning is excellent in FPS games and I would prefer it to a scripted cover system (although both would be even better). Prone combat would be a plus too for sniper builds and could be implemented as a hold down function of the sneak toggle key.
sumyungai
Actually, I had GOW in mind when I wrote that. In fact, that was the single thing that bugged me the most about it; bouncing between sticky spots when you're trying to run from whatever giant thing was trying to eat you at the time, or not taking cover when or where you were intending. Made movement seem really clunky at times.Again, it's your taste, and I certainly wouldn't have to download it, but I'd still be much happier being able to lean/prone. neok182
@skojolt: a full cover system like gears would most likely be impossible as a mod. not to mention i don't think anyone would want to try and do it just because of how hard it would be. Lean/prone would most likely be possible via the FOSE. @Sumy: yea i here ya that does get annoying. Mass effect cover system would be better for fallout. Just for someone like me who uses one of the closer shoulder cams and pretty much plays the game in third person i'd love to cover like in gears lol. and still be able to jump as well! lol
vash22
cover? what is this cover thing you speak of? you mean that annoying thing that stops me from always getting a headshot from REALLY REALLY far away? i really dont get why you would need cover in a game like this. Even the enemies with fullautomatic assault rifles only shoot in bursts so they dont deal that much damage very quickly. The only enemy i think you would need cover for are the supermutants with miniguns, but thats why they are the first thing players kill in a gunfight. plus you can heal youself up to full health instantly with your pip boy, so there is no reason to hide while you lick your wounds. idk, maybe its because i usually play a rifle character and can take out the dangerous targets before they can get a shot off. A cover systems like GoW or M.E. would take a gigantic amount of work and knowledge and the payout would be so minimul IMHO.
Omnimmotus
i really dont get why you would need cover in a game like this. (Twice as many enemies + both enemies and players take more damage + upgrade on the damage of the weaker and common guns.) I also have a mod, or at least I made my own mod based off of the idea of another mod, which makes stimpacks take effect over a couple of seconds, which makes combat much more dynamic. Putting these together with some sort of cover would be brilliant. Someone could try doing the cover like furniture is done, at least as a proof of concept. (i.e. you walk up to the wall, use the wall, your character plays a "getting into cover" position, and then all that would be needed is free use of weapons during this "sitting". (Because at the moment sitting disables the use of weapons.) Personally, I just wish I didn't constantly have to deal with my gun hitting the small walls I'm hiding behind. Apparently your character isn't smart enough to lift the gun higher into the air to clear the wall. This means I've gone into VATS and seen my character unload clips upon clips at someone, all of them hitting something like a sandbag or pipe that just happened the be in the way. I've also set up a series of VATS shots, and then immediately after that the enemy ran behind a wall. Apparently my character didn't notice, and continued to fire with excellent accuracy at the hidden enemy's head, doing absolutely no damage because of the CONCRETE WALL between us. VATs needs some sort of smart mode or checks to make sure your character doesn't act retarded. Ever had a guy doing melee with you and you try to VATs him, but your character puts the gun through his head or torso and fires? (Since the end of the barrel is on the other side of his torso, he won't get hit.) I'd like it if my character either A: backed up or B: pushed the enemy away slightly with a punch or a hit with the butt of the gun. I'd also like it if VATs commands were discarded if the target moves behind 100% cover.
