Annoying sound in the wasteland

Just noticed this recently, which is odd because after starting a different game with NO mods installed it's still an issue. While roaming around I'll hear this sound played once every few seconds, which gets irritating very quickly. You can hear what I'm talking about here: http://drop.io/214965842

I've gone through the sounds.bsa three times and played through very nearly every sound file within it trying to find the culprit, I've scoured the GECK and searched through all of the regions looking for a sound trigger but to the best of my knowledge it isn't listed anywhere, nor is it to be found in the BSA. So, the game's gotta be getting the sound from somewhere. But -where?- What is it? And most importantly of all, how can I remove it?

This issue persists with both music and voices muted in the game, I'm completely at a loss here. Any sharp minds care to lend a hand before I throw this thing out the window? I don't know if I was just tuning it out all of these days and only now caught it or what!

ive had so many problems with F3 sound its untrue. i just play with it off now -.-

best thing i can suggest is re-installing or getting new audio codecs, disabling/unistalling Microsoft Live since its a bag of poo and is normally the cause of sound problems within F3.

oh and don't run F3 with the new WINDOWS LIVE BETA MESSENGER since that was fooking my sound up also.

other than that. play without sound, or at very very worst, buy a Sound Blaster 16bit soundcard (or more than 10 year old equivalent) instead of the 32bit one you're probly running now since F3 seems to have no issues with 16 bit cards

Thanks for the response!

Eugh, yeah. I nuked that worthless Live thing as soon as I figured out how to, why people insist on further hosing down PC software these days is beyond me.

Been running it on an Audigy 2 ZS or such, other than a little popping sound in the left channel every few seconds and the voices of some NPC's during conversation getting abruptly clipped short I've not had too many problems with it up until this one. Was trying a game last night and it took a few minutes for the problem sound to start (was a save further back,) but once it came in it'd play sooner than the last one until it happened so often that I'd occasionally get two back to back or two even dropped right on top of each other.

Still have an old Live! Value SB around here somewhere before they went to digital, maybe that'd be an option. Probably still a 32-bit card, though.

A reinstall would be a lot of hassle but at this point I'm kinda thinking it's worth it, I've already beat the game once with no trouble. Bethesda really ought to hire on a bigger debugging team one of these days (and USE them,) no amount of voice acting is going to make unstable programming become any better.

  • 2 weeks later...
Ugh, so it's now ten days later and I'm still no closer to a solution to this. Started over with nothing installed but the fast start mod then gradually added mods back in, playing for a fair stretch each time. Then I sorta hit a wall and ran into the problem again. No ideas, no solutions, no culprits, and as of now no response from official tech support when I passed it their way some two days ago. Losing my mind over this one, want to keep playing it but need to get it fixed first!

i WISH my f3 made that noise, it sounds awesome.

Mine makes this REALLY LOUD static POP noise whenever a flamer or minigun stops its ambient powerup noise (ie. for flamers its the gas-nozzle hiss, for miniguns its the revving up noise before and after)

whenever those looping noises end you hear a REALLY LOUD ----PHHHHHHHHHHHHSHTTT~!

really freaking annoying with sound turned up all the way =(

Ouch! I get that with some modified sounds on Left 4 Dead, never pleasant.

It -is- a neat sound, kinda makes me think of a deathclaw in a canyon, but the thing is, it's not so neat when you hear it once every two to three seconds, everywhere, regardless of what you're doing. Then it makes you want to target your own head in VATS.

Plot thickens, Bethesda doesn't recognize the sound either. Weird! Anyone know of a simple FO3 .esp viewer that only shows you what each mod contains rather than trying to pick through the GECK for those elusive little asterisks?

Think I'm onto something here. Narrowed it down to three possible mods.

I'm not about to point any fingers because I haven't figured out the exact mod or exact reason for this problem, but after doing quite a bit of testing I wound up removing the ZBFO leveled lists mod. At first the problem disappeared (was happening the instant I stepped out of the shack from the Alternate Start - Roleplayers mod so testing was easy,) though after maybe an hour of playing the sound came back.

The other two mods I had figured might play a part in this are Mart's Mutant Mod (Increased Spawns and Zones Respawn) and LJD Enclave Enabled. I had figured that the problem was due to something modifying the zones in one fashion or another, I may have been correct with that belief. Soon as I loaded a previous savegame and played through it ran fine, no trouble. Now, I know there's other people out there using these mods -without- this problem, so I don't understand exactly where the issue lies. All I know is now without any of those mods running I've yet to hear the problem sound, though I'm once again going through that save game = crash to desktop nonsense.

Not sure if this is of any use to anyone else but after dumping two weeks into it it'd seem weird not to post any successful news on this issue. Thanks to those who've replied, think I've actually got it now! Just need to peek under the hood of those mods and try to find anything out of the ordinary after putting some more playtesting hours down.

Edit 2-7-09: Wouldn't you know, ran into the bug after hours of game time. Started over, got it again. I don't know, this sucks.
