Random Crashes

Alanor

Recommended Posts

I tried to search a bit first but could not find anything.

What happens is that Oblivion simply crashes on me and forces me to return to windows. This seems to happen randomly (although it happens often when I kill something (as the last blow lands)) and sometimes when casting specific spells the game freezes completely (does not quit to windows).

My system:

Windows XP Pro (SP2)

3 gb RAM

nVida GeForce 8800 GTS

Intel 2,4gHz Dual-Core Processor

Oblivion (no SI) latest patch

OBSE v15

Mods:

Unofficial Oblivion Patch

Fran

Deadly Reflex

Midas Magic

HGEC

Vaults of Cyrodil

Quest Award Leveler

Alive Waters

Black Cat Jewlery

Ivellon

Adonay's Elven Weapons

Yes, I tried disabling all the mods, downloading new drivers, rebooting, creating a fresh install and playing without patch or mods...

Crashes are a part of the Oblivion experience. It's the game's way of telling you that you need to take a break.

There will always be some crashes, all we can do is minimize them.

Save often, it will keep the frustration level down.

Anything running in the background can cause a crash. Especially a program that likes to call home, such as an antivirus program that updates without warning, or an instant messaging program.

Start by disabling everything that accesses the internet when you play. that includes the Vonage, Skype, IM, xfire and anything that calls in or out.

Many programs use a auto update feature - such as HP printers (how often does your printer driver need updating?)

MS auto update can cause crashes.

Then look for programs that run in the background, they are stealing time from the game and if they don't give control back quick enough - crash.

MS indexing service, antivirus progs that scan everything in the background, Auto defrag programs, Scheduling programs all steal cycles from the game. Any of these can cause crashes.

After you have cut down the crashes caused by external stuff, start looking at your mods.

You probably won't be able to get rid of all of them, but you can minimize them.

Is it deadly reflex 5.0? If so, it is the cause. This is a bug present in the first release and in the hotfix that SkyCaptain posted on Nexus. There is another patch on page 3 of this thread: http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.ph...eadly&st=40

It seems to, if you clean save, fix the problem for the moment. I haven't noticed any of the freezing or crashes you described since I started using it.

To clean save: (As far as I understand)

- Load Oblivion with DR 5 ticked.

- Save in an interior cell

- Exit Oblivion

- Untick DR 5, enter Oblivion

- Say OK to message saying the savegame is missing a mod (or whatever that message says)

- Save again in the interior cell

- Overwrite DR 5.0 Combat moves with the patch on 3rd page of that site

- Enable it again in Data Files

- Enter Oblivion

- Enjoy without freezes!

Note: It may be possible to do this in a more simple way, I found this somewhere else, but this did work for me. So far.

Have fun,

Chris

Edit: You save you reinstalled and played without mods. That might suggest it is also something other than DR 5.0 In which case it must just be something to do with Oblivion. But definitely give the patch a try anyway.

Well, thanks for the reply. Sadly nothing here worked. I shut down every other process, didnt work. I am going to try buying SI now and making yet another fresh install (without Fran).

That the game crashes I can accept, but not when it does so every 2-10 minutes and sometimes crashes as soon as you try restart the game.

The main issue however is that I have used all these mods before without problems, this is unfortunately a rescent problem. I have not switched hardware or installed many programs and no other game gives me this ammount of problems.

Have you defragged recently? A fragmented hard drive leads to increased time for the game to find things, and if the thing it tried to find is not present when it moves on - CTD. Normally the game tries to read ahead of what is happening but sometimes it gets bogged down when it has to jump all over to read something.

Defragmenting organizes the files (including the game) and places everything in (hopefully) an optimized location to allow it to find things quicker.

Try to get it working better without any mods first, then add just a few mods at a time so you will know what mod causes what problem.

I don't think we will ever get rid of all of the random crashes, but maybe we can reduce them to a more reasonable amount.

Yes, as bben46 said .. random CTD (Crash to Desktop) is very common in every game, not just Oblivion ... it's just that Oblivion is a bit more sensitive than other games =p

Anyway, I've installed fresh Oblivion on fresh computer where everything is still new and Oblivion still crash on me but it doesn't happen very often, like once per 2 hour or 1 hour but it's a good sign I guess ... keeps me from getting too addicted to Oblivion =p
