FO3 and windows 8 how to get it to work?

So, I was feeling I wanted to revisit washington and kill me some mutants.

Sat and watched the horribly dull process of fallout installing, and clicked the launcher nothing happen no error message just wont work.

Next step I grabbed the latest patch 1.7 uk version not sure what the difference is really between uk/us.

Ran the launcher nothing happened no error message or anything.

So next step was to install fose and see what happened and fose said I miss xlive.dll.

Grabbed the xlive.dll ran the launcher nothing happened at all.

Ran fose instead, it started to run but nothing happens.

So does anyone know how to get FO3 to work with windows 8?

I have tried various compability settings native to windows but none have any effect.

Would anyone mind giving me some solutions? :)

Did you use FOMM to replace the Xlive DLL?

I got mine running, might help to run in vista compatibility mode.

No I didn't I used the ms package that added games for xbox.

As I understood that package is needed to run fo3 first time with launcher.

Won't work hmm I can choose compability on fallout3.exe but not the launcher.

To apply settings on the launcher I must use the annoying guide.

I will try to reinstall and see if windows will allow me to install it as a vista version.

I believe I need the launcher to do it's magic first before going with fomm, fose, 4gb enabler?

In order to generate the needed *.ini files?

Try this, install fomm, select tools/install tweaker have it put the fake dll in, as for compatibility put it both the launcher and FO3.exe, if you use fomm, fose, ect put it on those as well to ensure everything is cooperating . If it dose not work, reinstall in this order. Fo3 any DLC,fomm, fose, set compatibility, have fomm swap out the dll. Run the game using fomm first, then try the launcher. In fact you should not bother with the launcher as FOMM replaces it with more options tho the launcher has a better simple graphic setup menu. NMM is nice but I dunno if it has the dll swaper in it.

Also if you have the space I suggest making a backup of your FO3 folder once you see it starts without the mods being installed yet. I broke imported sounds by not install bash right LOL So I gotta redo from my back ups too.

Cheers will see if your tips works :)

Wasn't aware that fomm would fake that dll :)

As for the launcher, I thought it was needed to make the basic 3 *.ini

Otherwise I never bother with it except once, to get the resolution and stuff. :)

Sounds good, take out the inis first if you can, I bet thats what got you messed up.

Newest version of FOMM has install tweaker, its has a normal texture fix to load textures faster or more stability. And it also have the fake DLL in it, that's really the only good place I know to get the DLL.

I followed your steps, removed everything related to fallout 3 including the ini created in my documents path, and the one in the data folder.

Installed fallout 3, dlc, ran FOMM created the fake dll, patched the game to 1.7 and it installed without whining. So the fake dll works as intended.

Everything I could I told to run in vista, fose was allowed to inject it self. Even tried to run it elevated didn't do anything different.

Heres my fose_launcher.log seems quite normal

launching: Fallout3.exe (C:\spel\Fallout 3\Fallout3.exe)
crc = FE5B82AE
hook call addr = 00C05F61
load lib addr = 00D9B0F0
dll = C:\spel\Fallout 3\fose_1_7.dll
remote memory = 001C0000
old winmain = 006EE300
launching

But nothing happens, launching fo3.exe ignoring the existence of the launcher does absolutely nothing.

Should I ignore the existence of the 1.7 patch? But think fose needs it?

Okay how about this delete the inis in my docs, make sure you have as much free memory as you can. On my system and 8GB of ramm if water/fire fox takes up 3GB FO3 dose not want to run.

DId you try and run the game when you had vanilla and the patched version un modded?

I guess its my fault for missing steps. My apologies...

Note:Test start means to start the game, test game means to load a save file or start a new game and mess around a bit, you are looking for it to mostly work.

Put the game on medium graphic setting for testing purposes with bloom and HDR off.

Step one:Delete INIs in my doc\my games\fo3

Step two:Vanilla (default installed game)

Step 4:Test start,Test game

Step 5:Patch game and install geck if needed.

Step 6:Test start,Test game

Step 7:Install core mods

Step 8:Test start, test game.

Step 9:Install extra mods

Step 10:Test start, test game.

Do not save the game or let it auto save. There might be an issue with it crashing without a mod, but starting it up and it working some is a good sign if it continues to crash its a mod somewhere.

I just got done with mine and I had more issues with memory than with mods, it also might help to lower graphic settings while testing, oh and always try and wait if the crash/not responding pop up comes up, it dose not always mean a crash it just means not responding. Of coarse if you wait 5 min and its not done it crashed. LOL

The core issue I had was the fallout launcher would not run at all:

I never saw the splashscreen giving me the option to run windowed, resolution hdr/bloom vsync and so on.

So I the game could not generate it's own ini files needed to run the game. :)

How I got it to work:

Create folder Documents\My Games\Fallout3
Copy the default ini files from fallout new vegas:
FalloutPrefs.ini and FALLOUT.ini
And copy over the Fallout_default.ini located with the launcher.

Note, I haven't touched a single mod as of yet.
So only tools I have used is vanilla fallout+dlc+fose+fomm+1.7official patch.

In this last attempt I cleaned out the records manually in regedit that had any reference to fallout3 and Bethesda Softworks\fallout3
I set fallout3.exe to vista service pack 2 and fose_loader.exe to vista service pack 2

That made it work quite well.
