Engine based bug with effect durations over 1000?

When messing around with effect durations in Fallout 3, I noticed that whenever I set the duration of an effect to a 4 digit or larger number, the effect lasted much, much longer than the number of seconds it was supposed to. An effect set to last one hour, for example, would last for over a game day. I've recently found the exact same thing with New Vegas; not so surprising, seeing as they have so much in common.

I'm starting to think that the UMON values for drug addiction, which are supposed to last 30 hours, from the point of ingestion, could be lasting for weeks.

I've had the experience with chems, how, even when not using a chem for a few days, I still seem to be guaranteed to get addicted if I use it.

This experience would seem to support my hypothesis.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is it operating as it's intended, or is there some glitch in the engine itself?
