Creating a companion

I have a mod idea, inspired by the Bittercup companion mod, to make Amata (and possibly others) companions. What I'm looking for is to create the option for her to come with you when you first leave the Vault (probably have to get rid of trouble on the home front) or allow you to go back to vault or something after MQ is finished. But I have nooooo idea where to start. Anyone care to lend a helping hand?

Thanks a lot, this should be a great help. I know Amata could be a bit of a problem, but there is more than one I believe if you know what I mean, as in the Amata you see in Escape! is a different one to the Amata in Trouble On The Home Front, so I guess you could use the first one, or I could just make an entirely new character that looks and sounds like her.
