First, It's usually a good idea to read the instructions, where it says to NOT start Oblivion using the default Oblivion, but to start it using the new launcher that comes as part of OBSE. The reason is, OBSE must start before Oblivion or it will not work, and any mod that requires it will not work either and usually causes the game to crash immediately.

As to installing a mod.

First, you must unzip the mod. I always make a new folder for each mod and place the zipped or 7z or rar file there. then using your preferred unzipping program (I use the FREE 7-zip which will unzip almost any zip format, including rar, zip & 7z) Unzip the mod in the same folder.

Now, copy the unzipped files into your Oblivion\data folder. You don't need the zipped file, or the readme file, but it is always a good idea to actually read the readme before copying any files as there might be some special instructions there.

If you see a message warning you that you are about to overwrite files, answer YES or YES to ALL. It will not over write anything, it appends the contents of the mod to the proper folders.

Then, when you first start Oblivion (using the OBSE Launcher) instead of selecting PLAY, select DATA. Your mod should be there with a empty check block beside it. click on the block and an x should appear there. Now go back and select PLAY.

After you have a few mods, It will pay to get OBMM (Oblivion Mod Manager) to help you keep track of the mods. It is not a mod but a separate program, as is OBSE and must be installed according to its instructions. OBMM also must be started first, However, it has an automatic OBSE starter built in. It also allows you to change the order that the mods load - very important when you have more than a few.

Hope this helps.
