I produced a .... well... "good" UVW map with max and i really can't get ANY further with my texturing because I fail at it

Texturing is all about layering.

Start in max with a base color for every different part. Assign those polygons a separate material ball from the material browser. Tint the color and apply it to your base mesh.

Once the base mesh has all the BASE colors, perform a 'Render to texture' and set it to 'use existing unwrap' and 'Diffuse Color' .

This will extract the colors you assigned onto a premade texture for you! Saving you all the hard work of coloring.

Once you have this done, its just a matter of adding on all sorts of details like

Grunge

Grime

Scum

Dirt

Rust

Scratches

Scuffs

Dents

Cracks

Paint Chips

Mud

Blood

Bird Crap

etc

The best way to get good photorealistic texture samples would probably be www.cgtextures.com (remember though you have a daily download limit so only get the ones you really want :))

Its all about layering in photoshop. Learn your blend modes in the layers tab, learn how to combine layers together to make things look good.

Usually the best textures have both Highlights via Scratches and worn-areas, and shadows via Ambient Occlusion, stains and rust.

Also dont forget the surface details like numbering or lettering, vents, rivets and bolts, seams, etc.

(Here is a free Rivets, Bolts and Seams Photoshop Brush Pack I made 2 years ago. Grab it and use it if you wish, lots of functionality for texturing if you want to add such things to your model! http://arcy-is-distracted.deviantart.com/a...rushes-63621015

BTW to generate an easy Ambient Occlusion, apply a default White material to the entire model, open your Rendering Options window, Go to Renderer, pick 'Light Tracer'

Go to Create, Lights, Skylight. Place a Skylight in your scene, click it and turn on Shadows

Then go to Render to Texture, and pick 'Lightmap'

This will generate a shadowmap for you. Take this shadowmap and throw it (in photoshop) on top of your diffuse color texture with a 'Multiply' blend mode (that usually looks best).

That will get your awesome totally-cool looking shadows and Ambient occlusion effects on the armor pieces. without that, it will just look fake :) AO = win
