xwm audio conversion: no more struggle

I've noticed people (including myself) are having a lot of trouble lately with converting Skyrim's .xwm files into mp3 or wav or so on. Until I built a new PC with Windows 10, I had always used the Skyrim Audio Converter found here on the Nexus (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/8303/?). Now on my new PC, it crashes regardless of what I do, which seems to be pretty normal these days, based on my searches. I've seen other programs designed to make this conversion, but there still seems to be a struggle getting them to function, and some are paid software.

I've used Audacity for all of my audio editing, and thought I'd try it for this purpose. I was unsuccessful with the latest Windows version. I dual-boot my PC with Kubuntu, so I thought I would try it out on audacity there. To my surprise, the Linux version opens the xwm files just fine. From there they can be exported to the format of choice.

If you find yourself struggling with this, try Audacity from a live CD or USB. Most linux distros have the ability to boot from installation media to RAM. I know it's an extra step, but works perfectly for me every time. Some linux images can be installed to a USB drive that can contain a persistence file that will keep settings and installed programs for the next boot; doing so will make a completely portable operating system that will work on most computers (a big reason I like Ubuntu).

Hopefully this information will benefit others. I can elaborate on the subject more if needed.

Thanks,

Chew
