How to Create Texture Mods For Dummies

Hey all,

So this game has got me really wanting to get into modding, which is something I have never done before. I'm also someone who prefers to refer to how-tos than to ask for help, but given the time I've had I'd figure I'd come here. If it wasn't obvious, I know nothing about how to create mods. Specifically what I'm interested in is texture modding. Either replacing textures, or just changing the colors of clothes that are in Cyberpunk. I'm pretty good with Photoshop, but I've never used it to mod for games. I've tried to join the CP77 Tools Discord as I saw that is where people point to to learn how to mod, but to be honest, that does not seem to be for me. It seems to be more for people who already know how to mod and are interested in modding Cyberpunk. Their tutorial section is very bare bones and leaves me with more questions than answers. Their ask for help section is a free for all where you can ask a question and hope to get an answer. I would prefer not to use it as it would be a plea for help with every follow-up from me being 'and then what' or 'why?', or 'I don't understand'.I would much rather get a how-to for complete beginners to help me through the process. So would anyone be willing to do this? A complete how-to of what you need, why you need it, and step by step thorough instructions that a 5 year old could understand. I understand it's a huge ask, but I'd be extremely grateful.

A working knowledge of Photoshop is a good start

The next step would be too familiarize yourself with how game engines work with meshes and textures, most importantly things like UV Mapping, and File type formatting such as Diffuse (or Albedo), Normal Maps, Specular Maps and Occlusion Maps. There are literally hundreds of websites explaining those.

You'd then need to get familiar with the individual game engine you're wanting to mod, as there are several different ones, and each are ... somewhat, unique, though they all share certain common features, such as those I listed above.

Finally some patience would be recommended. Despite certain people's opinions, the modding community is quite helpful to those who show a willingness to listen and learn, and are prepared to do at least some of the work themselves. It also takes some time before even the "in" crowd as some call them, even know what they are doing, particularly with a game that has been out for only 1 month. If CDPR are sincere in their stated desire to foster the modding community, and they come through with modding tools and information, then the knowledge and assistance you seek will follow.
