Any explanations for random freezes?

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone has any idea why my game would still catch random freezes. E.g. I would be fighting half way and attempted to use 'Flames' and the game just freezes there. It happens only occasionally and I can probably play an hour or 2 before the freeze would come up.

 

Sometimes it seems to corrupt a save or so and I'm forced to revert back to an older save, but luckily I save the game in a chronological order and have like 8 individual saves so I can easily revert back without losing too much progress.... I've used Wrye Bash and BOSS to sort out the leveled list, bashed patch and tags and load order, I've even used TES5Edit for cleaning dirty edits, but this occasional freeze is making my abit irritated.

 

P.S. Sometimes my game gets crashy as well, where quick saving would cause a CTD or pressing ESC to go the menu causes a CTD as well...

With a modlist that large, pretty much no matter what you do, your chance to run into some kind of issues are pretty high. At least you don't have Warzones or SkyTEST thrown in there too! :biggrin: Freezing/crashing every hour or so really isn't that bad, but the save game corruption you speak of is somewhat bothersome and you should sort that out ASAP. If BOSS suggests to not use a mod because of bad records, remove the mod. That's one big thing that could be causing it. Heat is also a factor, so maybe monitor your temps while you play(mainly GPU/MoBo temps). If you've got any overclocking set up, that could also potentially be the issue. Prime95/memTestx86 (or both simultaneously) for a few hours (overnight maybe) is recommended to rule out an overclock as a potential source for corruption. You should be able to run them both together for 12 hours straight without either one catching an error. If they catch an error, there's a problem.

 

A few general tips:

Try only running Moonpath to Elswyr when actually playing it's quest line. It's been known to cause a number of issues all over Skyrim by simply having it checked in your load order. These range from CTDs to odd occurrences (mostly broken scripts)

 

Maybe start cutting some of the fluff. I know options are nice, but do you really need 30+++ different modded armors to choose from?

Hmm... the save game corruption isn't particularly "strong" in a sense. It only makes maybe the recent few save or just 1 recent save cause a CTD on load up. As for the heat issue I'm pretty sure that isn't the case since when I started out with this new gaming desktop, heat/cooling is something I've been watching closely. I don't use overclocks either.

 

As far as I can tell, only issue BOSS suggested was SkyRe may have issues with 1 mod, but the weird funny thing is that mod is the perkless version which should in my case not affect it that much? I guess I will switch it off if it frustrates me enough.

 

As for the moonpath to Elswyr situation, I think I will take your advice on only activating it when I want to play it.

 

P.S. Since it's my 2nd or 3rd play through, that's why I added that much modded armors and weapons. Sort of my habit to want alot of variation/options as after playing a few MMORPGs and RPGs like Oblivion where its always a certain kind of armor for a certain level or class. It kinda irritates me alot, thats why I added so much. Although I tried to make sure they do not clash/have conflicts, the most conflicts would be all of it showing up on the crafting menu I guess.

Hmm... I will try that, but to be fair to the mod, the freezes occur randomly. From things like just running up a hill, to equipping a weapon or using a shout.

Unfortunately, I tried it out and my freezes happened much more earlier and more frequently... Whether or not there was a performance increase, I could not tell as I already use ATTK and HiAlgo which boosts my game alot already.

Looking at your list i noticed at least 2 things i changed on my system whern i had crashes:

 

- First of all you have far too many follower mods installed imho to be anymore effective at all - some change forth and others back again

- I can see that you installed the Remove interior fog and many other lightining and climate mods - just mentioning the remark from the fog mod here as an example: quote 'Possible conflicts with this mod:
Any mod that changes the fog template of interior locations or adjust any of the location overide settings.
Depending on the load order of other mods, they or this mod may have there values overwritten.' Its a bit like your follower mods - some change forth and others back again

 

That long list of mods cries for issues basically - you should probably clean out your system and start adding mods step by step that are essential - many of those mods have been probably installed manually (making an assumption here as i know many of those come as loose files) - so you probably have many leftovers from mods by now.

 

Basically - clean your Skyrim installation to be a new blank one and then add essential mods (armors arnt essential) first like lightining, HD , climates etc. When everything seems to be running smooth add non-essential ones - thats armor etc.

 

Last remark: I cant say for sure but i had a lot of trouble with purewaters installed while having other lightning and HD texture mods - so i simply uninstalled it and my troubles where gone - might have been coincidence back then but i never installed it again and never had any troubles with the long list of other HD mods since then.

Removed quite a few follower mods.

 

I'm not sure but "Remove interior fog" claims to only have trouble with Realistic Lighting Overhaul, I only use Climates for anything lighting at all. But I'll try removing it after a few more tests. Also, this is actually my fifth install-through and about the third time I did started adding only essential mods and working slowly up.

 

I've also started to noticed why I couldn't see the problem when working slowly up, the mod list I have now is mostly flawless in terms of playing from level 1-9. After that saves start to get alittle bit weird, I get stuck on loading screens now and the freezes happen mostly after a long play-through. The loading screen is still movable as in I can rotate the model, the hints/tips still keep changing, it wasn't really a freeze but ctrl+alt+del-ing to task manager shows that TESV.exe is not using a lot of CPU usage anymore and its just stuck there.

 

Googled abit and found out about bloated saves? Seems like people have been claiming saves bigger than 8mb is trouble and my saves are already at 10mb.
