CTD when attempting to enter Windhelm

So I recently picked Skyrim back up after a year and some change of letting it sit around. I did a fresh install and went through making sure my mods are all up to date. After a bit of work I got it to run but now when I attempt to enter a building or move to another area the game CTDs. I disabled saving on wait/travel all of that. I have a papyrus log but I have no understanding of what it is saying.

Any help would be much appreciated.

While the papyrus log can sometimes yield useful information when bug tracking, it's not a 'crash log', so don't read it as such. Post your BOSS log (with the messages), include the list of plugins not recognized by BOSS if one is generated. Enclose them in spoiler tags like you did with the papyrus log.

1) Cleaning: download TES5Edit from that link, follow the instructions on the page, and clean the plugins flagged by BOSS as containing 'dirty edits.' You'll need to remove identical to master entries as well as undelete/disable deleted references.

 

2) then, disable the plugins not recognized by BOSS and see if you can transition cells without CTDs. If you can, then you know one or more of them are responsible.

tesvedit is easy to use

when the list of installed mods appears, right click on it and select none then find the file that needs cleaning and double click on it

(that will load the file and any master files it relies on)

when that has loaded the file and masters, right click on the file that needs cleaning and select filter for cleaning

when that has finished you can right clcik on it again and remove the ITMs

the when that has finished you can right click again and remove UDRs

 

then exit and select yes to save file.

 

do this for each file that needs cleaning.

 

when you have done that and BOSS reports that there are no dirty edits, get Wrye Bash.

check the readme files or download pages for all your mods, especially SkyRe and the unrecognised plug ins, and see if they give any specific instructions for the load order.

in Wrye Bash manually sort any mods that need to be moved and put the bashed patch 0 at the bottom of the list then right click on the bashed patch and select rebuild patch and then build patch

 

that should sort out a lot of problems

 

also, why do you have 2 WerewolfPerksExpanded_1.6b.esp files active?

When cleaning mods, you shouldn't just clean the ones that BOSS notes as needing cleaning, you should go through and check them all, since BOSS only notes those files that have been reported as dirty, and I've frequently encountered dirty edits that are not typically noted in the BOSS log.

 

Restricting yourself to cleaning just those mods that BOSS lists as dirty can leave lots of other dirty edits. unless the mod description says it has been cleaned with TES5Edit, you should always clean it (and even if a mod is noted as being cleaned in the description, if it is older than the most recent version of TES5Edit, it is worth cleaning them anyway).

Nocturnstalker:

As its been pointed out, you have two different versions of your werewolf mod running, which may be causing problems.

 

It would help if you posted up the full papyrus log, as what you've posted appears to be only a short extract of the log.

 

it is also worth pointing out that just because BOSS doesn't recognise a plugin that doesn't indicate that it is the most likely cause of an issue, it simply means that the mod has not been reported to BOSS. Unless a mod modifies either Worldspace or Cells records (or has scripts that affect them in some way) it is quite unlikely that they are the cause of your errors.

 

Given that you have several mods that are quite script intensive, I would advise against randomly disabling mods until the problem goes away, as orphaned script references (i.e. references to scripts inside the save game that are no longer present because their parent mod has been uninstalled) can cause all kinds of problems.

 

Your first step when encountering any CTD or similar problem should always be to clean all your mods to ensure that a dirty edit is not the cause of the problem.

Yes, so do many users (who are the ones reporting to the BOSS team about which mods need 'cleaning') when we download those mods. But the majority of users do not know what those records mean and cannot differentiate between a intended and unintended 'duplicate to master entries' (so what's a 'dirty edit' and what's not), nor do they know that 'repeat cleanings' have been known to cause mysterious record deletions (because TES5Edit is still 'experimental', and is just funny that way). When someone is just trying to troubleshoot their load order, especially when they've never used TES5Edit before, asking them to attempt to clean every plugin in their load order is not good advice. In these circumstances, they should stick with information indicated by BOSS, and clean only those plugins flagged as in need of cleaning. Unrecognized plugins can be cleaned only once for good measure, but really, the best way to handle them is to actually check them out in TES5Edit and see exactly what they are editing.

 

So, for people who are not familiar with reading plugin records in TES5Edit, the proper procedure for 'what to do' after finding duplicate to master entries in a mod which the BOSS database has no information on, is actually not to just clean them, but to report them to the mod author first and receive clarification. If the mod author cannot provide a knowledgeable answer, then the plubin should be cleaned and reported to the BOSS team. Deleted references, on the other hand, should always be undeleted and set to disabled.

That is the entire papyrus log that I have for my most recent issue with cell transitions. I went ahead and did as suggested, cleaning up the plugins suggested by BOSS. I have also disabled the mods that were unrecognized but to no avail. Thank you all for your help and I'll keep trying anything I can.

Sorry, typo, should have read shouldn't just clean.

 

 

In my experience there are very few cases where removing ITM records is a bad idea, and that is typically when you are using a mod that will revert a fix made by another mod (such as one mod I've seen recently that reverts the changes USKP makes to the Necromage perk)

Is that the full log? It only contains a minute of activity and doesn't reveal very much. The 'missing...' errors are harmless and merely indicate scripts from CH scanning for supported mods. Try playing for at least 15 minutes, then try and reproduce the CTD.

If your CTD is reproducible, the other method you can try is to disable your plugins in groups (except the DLC esm's and the unofficial patches). Start by dividing them in half, disable the first half, see if you CTD during cell transition. If you do, then disable the second half. If that resolves your issue, then renable half of the second half...and repeat until you narrow down on the plugin that is causing the CTD.

Also, have you edited the game ini files?

 

If you are only encountering this when you try to enter Windhelm and no other cities (try the other cities, just to eliminate some possibilities), then it's probably a mod that make edits to the Windhelm city cells, either edits to the cells themselves, replacement of textures or meshes specific to that city, or even just to add NPCs there.

It's fine if you know what you are doing. I just don't recommend it to new users because then they start cleaning literally everything, including the unofficial patches and mod plugins that have already been cleaned once by the authors.
