Black Screen on Start Up (Fallout 4 is not responding)

Howdy all, recently I've been encountering frequent crashes on start up with my game. Not even the enb info will load. Ive tried a fresh updating f4se, verifying integrity of my files. Below is my load order for any one who is willing to read through it, thankies

Now, are you actually crashing to desktop if you leave it untouched - or does it just go blackscreen?

Because my game does that, too. And at first I didn't know what was up.

Just try waiting for a couple of minutes and see if the title screen doesn't eventually come up, if this is the case.

 

Now, if that's not what's going on, then how many mods exactly do you have installed?
The plugin limit is 255, and if you install even 1 more non-ESL mod on top of that, your game won't load. It'll CTD at startup.

 

Next, try installing Buffout 4 - it gives a detailed crash log when you get a CTD and will be very helpful in pointing out which mod is the problem.

Thanks for the tips, I found out that i went way over the plugin limit, i made some revisions to the load order to try and fix it, but even at only 235 plugins my game still fails to start.

when I start up the game the f4se command prompt loads, and then the game opens, but thats it, all its shows is a black screen until it pops up the "fallout 4 is not responding" window

Did you install Buffout 4? You really should, because I can't make heads or tails of your load order as-is.

It's a complete mess. I hope you're not using LOOT to organize your load order.

LOOT is fine for small load orders, but if you hit 1oo, you have to start organizing it yourself.

Your problem might just be a simple load order issue.

I'd say try organizing it before installing Buffout4, even.

 

I'll post my load order method, followed by my current load order so you can see it in action.

 

First - the mods that snap to the top of your load order no matter what, can't really organize those.
Second - Settlement mods
- - - - - Mods that add new settlements
- - - - - Followed by mods that alter settlement functionality [more build limit, unlocked dlc buildable objects, etc]
- - - - - Followed by mods that add buildable items to the build-mode menu
- - - - - Followed by Patches for build mode mods
Third - Mods that tweak and alter the game in broad little ways
- - - - - Changes to sneak mechanics, Cell respawn timers, Combat damage variables, Faction tweaks, Quicktrade, Player comments, things like that.
- - - - - Auto-Looting mods, Mods that make Radstags friendly, Mods like Chill Pill, No Death Weapon Drop, Level Cap, Edits to how Melee combat works
- - - - -
Fourth - Mods that add NPCs to locations
- - - - - Goodneighbor Neighborhood Watch, NPCs Travel, Dr Goodneighbor, Better Goodneighbor and Better Third Rail, etc.
Fifth - Quest Mods.
- - - - - Start with the bigger quest mods and place smaller quest mods beneath them.
- - - - - Combat Zone Restored goes here, too.
- - - - - If you have any patches between quest mods, place them where appropriate in this section.
Sixth - Settlement Overhaul mods -> Mods that alter the Settlement Framework in any way

Now, are you actually crashing to desktop if you leave it untouched - or does it just go blackscreen?

Because my game does that, too. And at first I didn't know what was up.

Just try waiting for a couple of minutes and see if the title screen doesn't eventually come up, if this is the case.

 

Now, if that's not what's going on, then how many mods exactly do you have installed?

The plugin limit is 255, and if you install even 1 more non-ESL mod on top of that, your game won't load. It'll CTD at startup.

 

Next, try installing Buffout 4 - it gives a detailed crash log when you get a CTD and will be very helpful in pointing out which mod is the problem.

Thanks for the tips, I found out that i went way over the plugin limit, i made some revisions to the load order to try and fix it, but even at only 235 plugins my game still fails to start.

when I start up the game the f4se command prompt loads, and then the game opens, but thats it, all its shows is a black screen until it pops up the "fallout 4 is not responding" window

i've been meaning to move to mod organizer for a while, since i heard that its better for users with a longer load order. Is it possible to transfer the mods from vortex to mod organizer?

Never understood why people add so many mods to their games.

I've rarely if ever exceeded 50. In this game all your really need is a) Weapons of choice, b) Armor of choice, c) bug fix mods, and d) crafting related mods. Everything after that should be a very small number (10-20 tops).

Moar doesn't mean better - Better means better.
