Eye of Magnus Quest Bug

I've hit an annoying wall recently with the Winterhold College. I hit a point in the eye of magnus sage, where the quest wouldn't roll over to the next quest.

 

This happend in the Revealing the Unseen quest. Where the arch mage confront the thalmor Ancano. And the eye overloads. Mirabelle tells me to go find the Arch Mage. And then the game suddenly switches, as though nothing ever happend. Ancano walks around carefree. Mirabelle talks to you as if you just arrived at the college for the first time. And anyone you meet outside the Hall of Elements. Will walk around casually. You will get a title flash the the quest "Revealing the Unseen" is completed. But you won't get one to start "Containment" (hence all the actor don't take their roles as the script hasn't been given).

 

I found a work around on this:

 

 

After I noticed an odd glitch in the previous quest at stage 99 were the eye of magnus overloads and the arch-mage dies and Mirabelle Ervine brings the quest to completion but dose not give me containment. Arncano stops messing with the eye and in a rather amusing way walked out of his barrier and I could speak to him like nothing happened. Ervine gets up and walks around, with agina normal dialog. Then when I went outside, know one even gave a darn that savos what dead (Ervine ironically said "Oh know how could this have happened" despite the fact that she was there but that's just regular dialog for one a corpse is found). Tolfdir was sleeping in the hall of attainment and no matter what I do or how many times I reload the save noting fixes it.Emperor Ray IV 17:16, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

This happened to me too, but I play on the PC. I found a way to get back on the quest line using the console, but I had to skip over this quest and go to the next one, even doing that. I couldn't find any way to actually play through the Containment quest, possibly because it is MG05 and Revealing the Unseen (the prerequisite) is MG06. In any case here are the console commands to use if this happens to you:

1. setstage MG07 0 : Start the quest after Containment (The Staff of Magnus)
2. player.additem 000a34f8 1 : Quest item from Containment (Torc of Labyrinthian)
3. player.additem 000f1b33 1 : Quest reward from Containment (Savos Aren's Amulet)

 

 

The issue is now that using player.setstage to complete the eye of magnus quest. Doesn't work. it starts, but you can't finish it. And all the actors/npc roam carefree as though nothing happend. setstage 0/1/10/20/30/40/50/200 all make no difference to it. And you can't jump it to complete the Winterhold college saga. The next quest Aftershock doen't allow it either.

 

I'm currently running over 52 mods. I've used BOSS to check for errors, and TES5. Running via SKSE

Have you found a fix for the second part. I didn't have the problem with Containment, but The Eye of Magnus quest won't start after The Staff of Magnus completes.

 

Also as a side note I noticed that at the end of Revealing the Unseen, the eye of magnus orb was not in the Hall of the Elements but Ancano was there casting lightning at the spot where the orb should have been. At the time I dismissed it as a minor bug, but it may have been related to the cause of the above issue. Someone please help I really want to complete The Eye of Magnus quest because the College of Winterhold questline is the one questline that I have never completed with any character on console or PC

I know that i am years too late ... but if anyone still has the same problems today (like i did): For me it helped to load a savegame right before completing the staff quest (mg07) and then end the quest via console (player.setstage mg07 200). This triggered the follow-up quest mg08, which was not triggered before via dialog option.
