Keanumoreira
(For the full story, articles and videos are available elsewhere online, but are not in accordance to Nexus' rules and, therefore, cannot be posted. Gusman's press conference is tolerable, but I cannot find an appropriate video at this time; one that can be provided would be appreciated.) The Orleans Parish Prison SHOULD have been a correctional facility that SHOULD have been in accordance with what the city of New Orleans had intended for it to do, and yet, it falls victim to a whole menagerie of problems that stems form pure incompetence and neglect. Never mind the fact that the prisoners are subjected to deplorable living conditions that are in violation of their constitutional rights NOT suspended by incarceration, as expressly documented; or the alarming disbelief surrounding their possession of illegal substances, a firearm (seriously?), and that some of them have even been allowed (or were simply not monitored) to leave the prison and wander the streets willingly-- but where were the security personnel who are trained and employed to monitor these individuals? Where is the common decency that these inmates have been deprived of (they're sleeping on the floor and serving food adjacent to where they shower for goodness sake)? Oh, but fear not, for Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman comes to the rescue and claims to clean up the mess, which, mind you, he is partially at fault for. When addressing the press, his defense was directed towards casting the blame on the Mayor (which, although the Mayor is also responsible for this incident, is just Gusman's way of circumventing his involvement), and attempting to curve the blame away from him and his faculty as best he could (which was clearly a shoddy attempt at that). He claims that his "dedicated team of trained professionals" are doing the job, and that he couldn't find any considerable evidence to charge the deputies for what is clearly a lack of standard prison protocol. He even goes as far as saying that he couldn't recall seeing a gun on the video, regardless that it was clear as day. Obviously, Gusman is not doing his job, and prisons like the Orleans Prison Parish continue to get away with corruption and inmate abuse under the public eye everyday. So tell me, Nexus, what do you propose we should do if city and government officials can't do it for us? And if there actually is someone here who knows what they're doing, please contribute and help us overcome this problem.
