Calzien Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 (edited) Lately my game continues to crash whenever I try to save the game. No other issues, it just crashes. I can go to save and as soon as I try it insta-CTDs. I've rolled back to another save which allows me to save but oddly the one just before it will CTD and any some before it. However awhile after if I attempt to open the System Menu tab again on that same save or ones that don't crash on save, it crashes. Issues began after I updated a few mods. I have tried loading the game without those mods testing it one by one until I removed them all from my game and it still crashes on saving or viewing the System Menu a few minutes after loading a save. Loading a save and opening the menu works fine, but try after a few minutes, it crashes. So far I've tried to uninstall SkyUI and reinstall, verify my game cache, reinstall SKSE, and remove all mods I installed since the crashes began and nothing works. I've checked my Papyrus logs, no errors. Nothing shows in the log as errors, heavy loading, or anything before the crashes. Any idea what may be going on? I appreciate the help, sorry for the thread but on my way to work as I type this. Thank you in advance. Edited April 13, 2013 by SamusKnight2K
Calzien Posted April 13, 2013 Author Posted April 13, 2013 (edited) I had updated Frostfall, Guard Dialogue Overhaul, Realistic Needs and Diseases, Wet and Cold, RaceMenu, and I think that's it. Removed each one and it still happens. Even removed the mods I have worked on, none of which were modified before the crashes started and that didn't help either. I hadn't changed anything except the mods mentioned above save for skeletal nif tweaks, and even removal of those did nothing. My saves by the way are about 11-12MB and have sat around that spot for months now and in fact have gone down a little recently since I used the PDB command to purge my save a week ago due to a faulty mod install. It had been running fine since then until now. Edited April 13, 2013 by SamusKnight2K
Calzien Posted April 15, 2013 Author Posted April 15, 2013 (edited) Please forgive the bump but I'm hoping someone might see this and may be able to assist me. I've been doing searches on it but haven't really found anything that's related to my problem itself. I'm not playing around or near Nightcaller Temple (This happens with a save just after finishing the Eye of Magus, and on a save before it after just completing Innocence Lost after leaving the Arentino Residence. The "good" non-crashing on save is right after leaving Windhelm, standing on the bridge.) as I've beaten that quest over 40+ hours ago. My character is Lv55 which is why I have such a large save file. All of this started right after updating some mods and like I've said I even removed those mods via complete uninstall and it still occurs. Prior to this saving had no issues, no problems but now it does. Earlier saves included. Edited April 15, 2013 by SamusKnight2K
andyg65 Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Hi your crashes are almost certainly something to do with installing & uninstalling mods, take a look at http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Troubleshooting#tab=Mods_and_SavegameThere's also a link to creating a clean save which may help you resolve this, good luck!
andyg65 Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Hi my guess is that your game files have become messed up by the installation / un-installation of the mods rather than being an issue with area / location in the game. Take a look at http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Troubleshooting#tab=Restore_Vanilla_Skyrim and the clean save process . Before trying to clean up your files you could make a copy of your current save and have a go at re-installing all the mods ensuring that any load order or conflicts are addressed, use BOSS to sort that out then Tessedit to check that BOSS got it right,. Gopher who does the Skyrim Mod sanctuary tube has some good tutorials on using these tools. I've just recovered a heavily modded skyrim by doing this .
Calzien Posted April 16, 2013 Author Posted April 16, 2013 Yeah I know but as I said it started to happen after I updated some mods, prior to that it was fine. But I think I solved it anyway, something must have gotten corrupted somewhere along the lines because I found out where the save crashes and menu crashes stopped in a few older saves and played a little bit from there, saving worked fine and so did the menu. Somehow the game must have corrupted the saves between getting the Staff of Magus and defeating Ancano since that's where the primary issues began. But when I rolled back to a save just before I fought the Dragon Priest the issues seemingly vanished. I've taken special care NOT to continuously install/uninstall mods so that wasn't the issue. As for uninstalling them I only uninstalled to see if they were the issue, if somehow during an update it corrupted some file. But that wasn't the case since the problem still persisted. After finding out they were not I reinstalled the mods. My save is about 211 hours in and actually at 13MB. Funny enough comparing it to another save over a hundred hours prior I've gained about only 1MB in size since then. Fortunately however I had finished the Staff of Magus quest and then went onto finish Eye of Magus so rolling back my save only cost me maybe 5 hours of work.
MercyKilling Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 (edited) Hrm. I seem to have a slightly different problem. I took an extended break from playing Skyrim for perhaps two months or so....no adding mods or anything. Didn't even fire the game up during my break. Now, however, I CTD immediately after the Bethesda logo screen. Can't be a mod conflict, as it worked fine before my break. Any suggestions? Edit: I also have NO additional content. No Dawnguard, no Dragonborn, No house builder. Just Skyrim. Edited April 16, 2013 by MercyKilling

No Dawnguard, no Dragonborn, No house builder. Just Skyrim. If your game CTD when loading logo screen the best way to solve this is to download tes5edit it will imedieatly tell you what mod is missing its master... im kinda 100% thats your problem... However i have the same problem cant save .. the funny thing is that i could make a hard save 2 days before i went back to playing then suddenly my game CTD when trying to save in any way, fast travel or entering leaving a house and that was without adding anything to the game... i can coc arround still not save... this has nothing to do with the walking nightmare quest... and im still wondering what mod is making the problem ... cuz im pretty sure its an unstable mod in the end... ive tried several things even the one with go back to working save then kill my self load ctd save and try dying and then save.. didnt work ... ive also tried to reset it by waiting the 31 days (month) in game... i am really looking foward to see some fixes and i will let you know if i find a way....also been playing a lot and i kinda started over, 5 times when i reach lvl 60-70 cuz then it will eventually crash... i really dont wanna do it again. cuz i know the quest so well that i might can do it with a band on my heaaad.. okay so i went back to an earlier save still cant save, i can if i make a new one still not the solution not this time... but when i do this it loads longer at looks like im just about to head outside the bannered mare.. thats where im stuck in an older save ... and yes i been looking through logs and tried to verify game catche a milliion times... deleted som mods in the way it was ment to... FIXED IT CONVINIENT HORSES MADE MY GAME UNSAVEABLE AND ALL IS BACK TO NORMAL its scripts are going on forever and is VERY UNSTABLE.. hopes this helps others... JUST DELETE IT go back to save your game in hard save quit then install again go back to working save then stopQuest CH and save again now go out and delete the mod FOREVER.. or at least till its stable... gaarh Edited July 30, 2013 by kagemad
