hginfront
To make it clear, I play the 360 version of Fallout 3 so I know that what is happening is not the result of any mod, or something. Anyway, my first trip through Vault 87 resulted in obtaining the G.E.C.K and being captured by the enclave. BUT, I later return. Go all the way through the vault to the entrance door, and open it. Outside there is nothing. Just a void. Was this area not expected to be discovered because of the fact that you cannot get in the other way because of the EXTREMELY HIGH radiation levels on the outside? Just want to know if anyone has the answer.
Tchos
I opened Vault 87 in the GECK to check, and there's nothing behind that door, and it doesn't teleport you anywhere. Not even any scripts. Most likely as you said, it was never meant to be opened.
hginfront
recently i went back there to prove to a friend that I wasnt lying about the whole thing. I jumped off the edge to prove it wasnt an infinite plane and I was teleported back to a random spot in the Vault. Weird ya?
Alceister
Good God it's an Experimental Teleportation Device.
Akadai
I opened the vault door as well, expecting it to be a quicker way out, only to be greeted by the void you speak of. I didn't really bother trying to step through it because I wasn't sure what it might do. I decided to close the door and exit the other way I haven't checked if the door still opens in v1.1 but they should probably have made it so that the door doesn't function I suppose I should be glad I couldn't go through the door, as I would have been greeted by an ungodly amount of rads outside that would have no doubtly killed me within seconds
Guest
Evenin'. Got me out of lurking to post this. The area was never meant to be gone to. Presumably the door being left open is a bug (it should probably be closed after the encounter with the good colonel in that room (bit of tacky work by Bethesda there... would have been better to have a dummy corridor with another locked door behind it imo...) The teleportation effect can be attained by walking out of the boundaries of any indoor space. You're teleported back to something called a COCMarker. It's the same spot you'll be in if you use the console to get there.
roadbum
If you try to enter from the out side (I was playing full God mode so I could) all you will find is a dead scribe tech in a radiation suit, and a door you can't open even with the console. Anyway vault 87 has a lot more unanswered questions than this one.
