Skyrim Gradual Lag

Wonksters

Recommended Posts

Hi Nexus,

I've been having this issue where as soon as my save profile loads, into about thirty seconds - one minute, it will start to heavily lag until it is unplayable..

Can you guys somehow pinpoint a problem that I should look for?

Thanks!

If you alt+tab out of the game and then back in, does it fix the FPS drop temporarily? I'm thinking you're running out of vRAM.

Could you post your video card specs and whether or not you're using any texture replacers (including the Official High Res Texture Pack). GPU settings such as AA may also be relevant.

If all else fails, you could always use something to monitor your vRAM usage while playing. If the game runs out of vRAM, it starts allocating video information to System RAM (on Vista or later at least) which causes a dramatic drop in framerate.

Holy s***, that worked fixed it temporarily for a moment.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Approx. Total Memory - 4049 MB

Display 2048 x 1152

CPU - intel core i5 750 @ 2.67 GHz

Installed Memory (RAM) - 8.00 GB

The only significant texture replacer that I'm using is 2k textures (performance edition).

GPU settings

I've also turned AA off for best performance.

Do you have any clue on what I should do?

Well there's a number of things you can do to free up some vRAM.

Without impacting visual quality at all you can:

A) Set up Skyrim to disable Visual Themes and Desktop Compostition. This should free up 40 to 50 MB of vRAM. To do so, right click on the shortcut you use to launch the game and under the compatibility tab uncheck the appropriate boxes.

B) Get Razer GameBooster and set it up to end explorer.exe when a game is launched (It automatically restarts any processes or services it stops when you exit the game). This will probably free up a touch more vRAM and 200+ MB of System RAM as well.

Unfortunately, your case of vRAM shortage is so bad, these two tricks will probably only extend your lag-free playtime by a few minutes. Without getting a new video card with more vRAM (2GB recommended) you're probably going to need to cut back on the eye candy somewhere.

You can reduce the resolution (dropping a small amount can have a large effect) The difference between 2048 and 1920 is something like 65 MB total (A little over 30 MB per frame and DirectX Games only ever store two frames without a Triple Buffering hack).

You can try something like Optimizer Textures to optimize and possibly downsize some of the textures from 2K but I believe the performance version was already run through a similar optimizer. IIRC, the alphas were already downsized in the Performance version, but if not that's one place where you could save a large amount of vRAM with practically no impact on visual quality.

If you're running the Official Texture Pack and 2K, you can unpack the Official Texture Pack, disable loading the BHRTP.bsa's, and then Overwrite any common assets with 2K's but this is situationally advantageous at best and probably won't reduce vRAM usage by more than a few MBs, just decompression stutter (which isn't the problem being discussed here ).

Dropping your AF setting can have a small impact on vRAM usage as well, and the difference between 8x and 16x in Skyrim is almost always negligible due to the uGrids/LOD restrictions (note: there are probably and handful of views in the game where 16x is quite noticeable on distant water, etc.).

Not an expert by any means but from what ive read most (if all) current games dont even use over 1gb of vram. Wouldnt that indicate gpu problems? I sometimes have that awful lag thing and unfortunately I just close the game and open it again and it works fine. Ive got a i7 2.66ghz gtx 570 12gb ram sound card display 1650x1050. Lag spikes appear random but ive been playing with mods lately, sometimes going inside or out into a building or fast travel wipes it out for me.

There are a number of games that can push well over 1GB of RAM once you start turning on the bells and whistles and whatnot. Skyrim @ 1920x1080 with default textures and no AA pushes around 750MB. However, High Res Textures and increased settings can raise that number dramatically. It's more than possible to push close to 3GB of vRAM usage if you really go all out, and you could even exceed that multi-monitor setups. Your FPS drops also sound vRAM related as the FPS drop often kicks in during cell transitions.
