evilkoal
first off, are you running vista?if so, that is why. vista takes up almost 2gb of ram if you let it run free, and oblivion only recognises 2gb of ram on any computer. (unless you use a modified oblivion.exe) i also suggest getting the program SuperRam (i know, it sounds like its fake, but it actually works quite well!) try getting streamline also

bben46
When you say 32 bit windows, I am assuming WinXP. This is what Oblivion was designed for. The biggest cause of slow downs is your video settings. Don't assume that just because you have a fairly good system (better than mine) that it will run at max on all settings. Anything else that is running at the same time will use some system resources and slow you down. One of the biggest hogs I found on mine was the antivirus program running in the background, then the Windows indexing service, any IM prog, including xfire. Running in windowed mode rather than full screen allows other programs to use a little processor time just to stay alive in the background. I unplug my cable modem, turn off everything that I can and have disabled the indexing service entirely. That gained me a decent increase in FPS and cut down on crashing. Then, see this site for the best tweaking advice I have found yet. http://www.tweakguides.com/Contact.html Start with the system tweaks, then the video tweaks and do the Oblivion tweaks last. It will take some time, but not only will your Oblivion run better, so will everything else.
maYuYang
You need to know that Oblivion is demanding on 2 levels:Graphics being the 1st one, bben already mentioned that. Since you have a multi Processor, I really recommend tweaking the ini, some values will increase your performance alot. Also, deactivating Vsync is also rewarding for more fps.the 2nd level is the Processor. Yours actually has the same speed than mine(I just overclocked it a little). The more script like mods you're running, the slower it will get. You could avoid mods which add a ton of other NPCs, that is what I am doing and it helps. These mods might help you, too.StreamlineOperation OptimizationLowPoly GrassOblivionScriptOptimizationOblivion PolyGoneOptimised Distant Land MAXQuiet Feet MAXI'm using all of them(except for lowpoly grass, but I guess I will use it from today on...) and they work together quite well. Also, from another thread, someone had a problem with an onboard soundcard, which will also eat resouces.
dezdimona
if your not into background music when you play( I'm not) setting music to zero will gain you some FPS also.
Jezza0
On the subject of the Script Optimization mod - according to BOSS (quote): May have a problem with Shivering Isles due to changed FormIDs causing a script to be written into cell data by mistake. Unconfirmed. As I have SI, I've stopped using it. But... can anyone actually verify there is a problem? Who has raised this concern?
bben46
Using onboard sound can cause slow downs - because it uses system ram for the music and sounds reducing the ram available for the processor. To test, turn off the music and sounds and check - the Imperial City Market District is a good place for FPS tests. Get the time to about mid day, enter the IV market and make a save, resume and walk through, watching the FPS. Then reload the save & disable sound and music and walk through again. SrgInsane
THe thing that gets me is that my computer used to be able to run oblivion on ultra high with 60 fps but after i had to take 1gb of RAM out my Oblivion is getting bad fps. bben46
That extra 1 Gig makes a big difference. It helped my FPS quite a bit when I went from 2 to 3 Gig. I don't consider 20 FPS especially bad. I commonly see numbers below 15 in combat with multiple opponents. If you take down a couple with ranged attacks it helps though.
