Iflyte
Okay then! This is my first time using mods on any game other than source mods. I've looked around and I'm mainly getting texture mods for unique weapons, a better pipboy light and surplus skill point reallocation. What do I need to do with these to get them to work? I'm not computer literate at all. I can barely upload files on my email. If anyone could explain in laymans terms what to save where, or what files to create to start modding, that would be rockin'. I'm also looking to hotkey some weapons, as going into my pipboy every 10 seconds is annoyin'. In a similarly simplistic manner, can anyone help me with this? Thanks a bunch in advance! maYuYang
Hi there, I will make it short:For the Weapon hotkeys, you won't need a mod, just enter your pipboy and press one of the 1-8 buttons(not the numpad, but above WASD). Click on one weapon and it's hotkeyed. You can hotkey up to 8 weapons, armors or items. Check the FO3Nexus for any mods you want to use. Once you downloaded them, you need to decompress them. Zip files can be decompressed by right-clicking them and selecting "extract" or so. Most modders however creat 7z or rar, you can extract them with the 7zip tool which is freeware. By the way, you should also download FOMM and ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated, I'll get to FOMM later. Install ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated, it's necessary for the game to recognize some mods. Installing the mods is a piece of cake: 1st open your Fallout 3\Data Folder, drag any Meshes, Textures, Plugins and Sound folders from your mods here. If you're asked to overwrite, click "Yes to all". Once again, Meshes, Textures, Plugins and Sound Folder HAVE to be in your Fallout 3\Data Folder! If you wonder what the plugins are, some mods require a plugin which holds all it's scripts. Those end with .esp. Now install and start FOMM, to the left, you shoud see several boxes and mod names next to them. check the boxes you want to activate. Note that some mods might be load order sensitive, you can change the load order by clicking and holding one mod in FOMM and dragging it to where you want it to be. Also, some mods will need FOSE, a special starter which adds additional scripts. You should always read the Mod's Readme, they have valuable information you should know. That should actually be it, if you did everything right, you can close FOMM and start FO3.
Iflyte
Awesome, thanks for the detailed response! I have but three last questions. They're really basic, but I'm terrified of ruining my saves or whatever. 1.) Do I have to install that Archiveinvalidater invalidated anywhere special? Same with the FOMM. 2.) So, the AII said not to have FO3 in program files. Sooooo...can I just ctrl X the entire fallout 3 folder and throw it into documents or my games or something and that's all I'd need to do? Is there difference between installing it somewhere and just cutting and pasting it somewhere? 3.) The Vampire's Edge retexture I wanted to use (http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1471) came as an Ms-Dos file. It wasn't in a RAR or zip or anything. Do I just save it in the Fallout 3/data folder and that's that (after having the Archiveinvalidater invalidated thing working first)?
maYuYang
1. No, just activate it, it should run automatically. 2. I doubt it, FO3, just like Oblivion sets up some Registry Entries when installing them. You could try it, but my guess is that FO3 won't be executable anymore 3. checking it atm, wait a sec...No, it's a zip file. Just extract it like you do with the other files. Zip(the name came from Zipper, hence the folder icon) is simple compress format supported by Windows and actually wouldn't need any tool for decompressing. Iflyte
Okay, last stupid question and I'll (hopefully) be out of your hair for a bit. How do I get my saves over when I re-install fallout 3?
maYuYang
your savegames are always in the folder My Documents\My Games\Fallout 3\Saves. Just cut them to your desktop, reinstall and paste them in again(just to be sure^^). Usually, Saves won't be overwritten, but better not risking it. Iflyte
EDIT: Fixed my problem all by myself! I'll leave this up just in case it's of any use to anyone else. The VE texture was extracted to the data folder as another folder labeled Vampire's Edge texture. Inside was a readme and a .esp file, which I took out and put in the data folder on it's own, without being inside the VET sub folder. I think went into the VET folder again, opened the textures folder in there, opened the weapons folder in there, and cut out the 1handedmelee folder, and put that into my already existing textures/weapons folder made from the gauss rifle mod I installed. And it works; shiny sword is shiny! Apparently I lied. This is the last stupid question. Okay, Reinstalled fallout somwhere else, got the AII and FOMM working just fine, found out why my mods were all Dos programs (Download Accelerator Plus was causing some weird problem. I just turned it off and yay!). I got several mods working fine using either the launcher > Data option or the FOMM. The only thing that's not working is that damned Vampire's Edge retxture. I've re-downloaded three or four times. It's saved where all my mods are saved, then extracted to fallou3/data just like everything else. A folder for it even shows up there. But I can't see it on the FOMM or the Data option thingy.

maYuYang
You will need ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated, otherwise the Game won't recognize the tex at all
