SunnyTheCat
There's been a topic like this before, but its solutions didn't work for me. I'm not new to modding, but this time I'm desperate. Skyrim crashes in certain locations. Currently I've pinpointed two of them: south of Whiterun when trying to travel to Riverwood and north of Riften. I've tried disabling all the mods (via NMM, just disabled all the active plugins)I've tried removing all the custom meshes / textures from Data/ folder.I've validated game files.I've run BOSS and there were no errorsI've tried waiting a week for a cell to clear, but to no avail. What else can I do? Please help.
ripple
Post your BOSS log (with the messages), include the list of plugins not recognized by BOSS if one is generated. Enclose them in spoiler tags so they don't clutter the screen.

bben46
Most often a CTD in a specific area is related to a mod that was removed - The save game expects to find something in that cell - or one that you can see into - that was removed - probably from a removed mod. Removing a mod does not remove references to it in the saves. :wallbash: Most of the time, the game can recover from missing things, but not every time. A good reason to make a permanent save every time before adding or removing any mods. Whatever it is was required at the time and is still in the save you are currently using. Try to bracket the time - use a very early save and test. Preferably the save you should have made immediately after exiting the cave from Hegen - but any other very early save should do. If the problem is not there - then jump to a more recent save - keep jumping until you narrow down the save that it starts with, then you may be able to identify the mod. If you can identify it, you have the option of reinstalling that mod - which will replace the item in the game - or playing from the point where your game works without that problem mod. Unfortunately, Beth doesn't give an option to edit the save to remove whatever it is that is causing the problem.
SunnyTheCat
Looks like you are right. I did load a rather old save game and I went to the same location and didn't crash. Is there any way to clean the save file of the dependencies? Or can I learn what mod was it that I disabled that does this?
ripple
BOSS has given you many error messages....First thing is to download TES5Edit from the link in your BOSS log, follow the instruction on the same page, and clean the plugins flagged by BOSS as containing 'dirty edits.' You'll need to remove identical to master entries as well as undelete/disable deleted references.Go through the log carefully and look for other error messages like this:QuoteSkyrim border control.esp ActiveContains dirty edits: 7 ITM, 0 UDR records. Needs http://skyrAkaviriGuild.esp- have you, at any point, ever had 'SkyTest' installed?- have you made any edits to the game ini files?- what is your system specs?Orphan data in save game is generally not something you need to be concerned about unless they involve papyrus scripts. For the other stuff, you can go to an interior cell with no NPCs and wait for 31 days to force a cell reset (although I think default value for worldspace cell refresh timer is 10 days, it's only dungeons that are 30 days). While you are at it, create a 'SKSE.ini' file using Notepad, include the following setting: [General]ClearInvalidRegistrations=1 and stick the ini file into '.../data/SKSE/..' (create the directory if it's not there already). Edited April 21, 2013 by ripple
SunnyTheCat
Thanks!- I never installed SkyTest- I did make changes to .ini files, but the game seemed to be stable so far. I did not change uGridstoLoad- QuadCore i7, GTX690, 8GB.I did wait 10 days in interior cell and I did create a SKSE.ini as you instructed. And I still crashed. Any way to force clean cells?I know that dirty edits are no good, but so far they caused no problem. I've read that cleaning them can break the game completely, so I didn't dare do it yet. However, since the earlier game save doesn't crash, does this mean that the problem is with some mod I may have uninstalled?I remember there was some tool for Morrowind that cleaned savegame mod dependencies. Is there something similar for Skyrim? Well this is just great. Only very early savegames load and don't crash, and I don't remember removing any scripted mods since then really. But I don't think I will re-play from that long ago anyway. There's gotta be a way to either force purge cell of mod dependencies or at least check the savegames to see what mods they were made with. SunnyTheCat
I've installed Wrye Smashed and checked for changed mods list. The only thing I removed was UFO mod and I don't think it can be causing this. I'm desperate (
ripple
Cleaning won't 'break mods.' Just don't do 'repeat cleanings.' Clean -once- only those plugins flagged by BOSS as containing 'dirty edits' (including the DLCs). You'll need to remove identical to master entries and undelete/disable deleted references (the second one is more important CTD-prevention wise). In spite of some claims that some duplicate to master entries as intended by the mod author, this is in fact not the case in 99.9% of the cases I've checked out. I don't know who started this misconception (it's certainly become rather 'widespread').....but regardless, don't think about this, just do it. There is no 'safe' method for quickly cleaning orphan script data from save games. Previous Bethesda games did not use papyrus scripting. It takes time for 'ClearInvalidRegistrations' to do it's magic. It's primary purpose (ATM) is to address save game bloat resulting from orphan data in save games. The documentation is in the SKSE readme if you want to check it out. Since you suspect the CTDs may be related to an uninstalled mod that came with scripts, post your papyrus log. Preferably a log for a game session of at least 10 - 15 minutes before the CTD. So play for a bit then head to the area where you usually crash. Enclose the log in spoiler tags, or if too big, upload to pastebin. Incidentally, do you CTD in exactly the same place, every time (as in this is reproducible), or is it just something that occasionally happens and mostly in that general area (but not always)? While you are at it, since you mentioned you edited the game ini files, post them too, and we'll look them over to see if there is anything amiss. When you uninstalled UFO, did you properly disable the mod in accordance to the author's uninstallation instructions? SunnyTheCat
Here's the log:http://pastebin.com/vSkWTV5QAnything you can figure out from it?Cleaned all the dirty edits. Didn't help. But the game did become more stable it seems after I cleaned the dirty edits and removed the mods that *I think* were broken (according to the log above): More Dynamic Injuries and Enhanced Blood Textures. However the game still crashes in between Riverwood and Whiterun (on a bridge that leads out of Riverwood and behind the farm near Whiterun). I take it, there's a broken cell somewhere in between.
