muskabeatz
Has anyone ever wondered why the Laser Rifle is far weaker than conventional rifles such as the hunting rifle and both assault rifles? You would have thought that being more modern technology it would be better than using conventional firearms, so really, what is the point? youreviltwinSA
I think the energy weapons - both laser and plasma - ignore damage resistance to a certain extent. I'm not entirely sure how it works, how much it ignores... I haven't seen anyone put up actual statistics yet. I don't think laser and plasma weapons COMPLETELY ignore damage resistance, as I'm sure my charater survives being hit by lasers and plasma longer when wearing armour rather than naked. But I get the impression that lasers and plasma can still do large amounts of damage even when someone is heavily armoured. This means that when used against a raider or molerat a regular assault rifle is probably more effective. But if you are fighting someone in thick armour, the laser penetrates and hurts them as if they were wearing less armour. In the old Fallout games different armours had different amounts of energy resistance. Everything had normal resistance, laser resistance, plasma resistance, fire resistance and explosion resistance. Fallout 2 (or Tactics?) added electrical resistance. And Fallout Tactics combined laser and plasma into one statistic. Anyway, these meant that certain outfits could be great against bullets but useless against energy weapons, or sometimes the reverse. Metal Armour had 90% laser resistance or something, the lasers just reflected off. There are a couple of mods on Fallout 3 Nexus that add energy resistance to some times of armour. For instance, "Improved Power Armor" makes it so that power armor has some energy resistance. Not much, but at least SOME, cause it is silly that a laser or plasma gun can totally ignore the fact that someone is wearing a huge bulky suit of Enclave Power Armor. Gorsnak
The laser rifle is also more accurate than any small arms weapon (except maybe the sniper rifle), has a low AP cost in VATS, and a large clip size. I don't find it to be at all inferior to the conventional rifles, quite the opposite.
ahmadfawaz
I heard Laser weapons are more effective against robots, is it true?
redshift1979
Pretty sure it's because energy weapons have higher critical hits. Therefore they are balanced out with weaker general damage rating.
Alceister
The Laser Rifle deals more damage per shot, is incredibly accurate, has low AP cost, comparable ammo capacity and it's not much slower at firing than an Assault Rifle. You hit a critical with the Laser Rifle on the first shot, and you more often than not turn people into smoking ash piles, whereas the best you can hope for with an Assault Rifle critical is a cripple. Plus it's about 3 times as durable as an Assault Rifle, but I guess this counterbalances its rarity. Anyways, I think people are getting the laser effectiveness against robots mixed up with System Shock 2 or the older Fallouts: I don't know.
