Vanilla stars showing in addition to mod stars and also visible through moons

Hi everybody!

 

So I've got a very strange issue with my stars and nothing I try will fix it; I've had this problem for years but kind of learned to live with it and forgot about it. I've recently got back into Skyrim though and have decided to try and fix it for once.

 

So basically, as you can see from the below images, I always have this low-res layer of vanilla stars in my sky. I can put any skystars.dds file in the textures/sky folder that I like, and they'll show up in-game fine, but the vanilla stars are always there as well, and this wouldn't even be an issue to me but to make matters worse they are visible through the moons. Any mod stars that I install look fine and they are masked by the moons as you can also see from these screenshots.

 

(They're black in a few of these because it's a new moon phase)

 

I've got a few other mods installed but only one skystars.dds file which should override the game's internal file.. but it's not. All of my other mods and texture replacements are working without issue. Replacing the galaxy works correctly and even the mod I have which removes the constellations works as it should. I manually created a new moonshadow.dds file to see if it would at least fix the overlay issue but it didn't make any difference.

 

I just opened up the official high-resolution texture pack files to see if there was a file in there perhaps taking priority but they don't even touch the stars file.

 

I'm at a loss now and so I'm turning to my trusty community for help :smile:
