I really need some help making a super simple mod.

I feel like a moron but with heavy dyslexia that's a common theme anyway.

I am a complete noob, but I am trying to get into modding by practicing with a little armor piece I'd like to use in my game. However, I'm feeling extremely discouraged. I'm trying to do a couple of things here (this is for personal use, since it involves another modders work - it will not be distributed).

 

Here's what I am trying to do:

 

Replace the Legion flag on the back of it with a downsized version of the American flag found at the end of Lonsesome Road when you meet Ulysses, hanging in front of the missile.

I am determined but really confused and could use some guidance. I'm massively frustrated with myself and the process. Can anyone help me?

Edit: after several days, through sheer dumb luck I figured out the first part of my issue, so I've edited this to reflect it.
