EDIT by LHammonds

Ignore rant and download Blender + all the goodies here:

Blender + Extras @ Fallout3Nexus

-------------------

If you go download NIF Skope from here:

http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=888950

Stay away from the nifscripts blender download.

I downlaoded it and when I tried to install it, it told me i needed another program to run it, so it said click yes to be brought to that page, so then i downloaded the program which would inturn allow me to use the original program I downloaded.

Upon installing the new download, I got another message now saying, in order for me to run the program I downloaed for the program I downloaded, I would need to download yet another program in order to run that one and again it asks you if you want to be brought to the download page.

At this point I stopped and uninstalled the NIF script blender because thee is no need to have to have one program to run another but yet need a program to run the program that needs you do get a program to run the program.

In short I don't need to keep getting program after program after program just to run the previous program.

This is absurd.

Which moron did this?

Actually there are many many programs that need other components already installed in order to run, for example many programs need C+, Java, .net framework, vb6, etc etc

Not like this there isn't.

Here is the layout of what happened

I downloaded the nifskope then I downloaded the blender for it that was on the same page.

Upon installation, it installed about 1/2 and stopped saying i need a program called blender to run and install the nif blender that was on the main ppage. So it said if you click yes it would bring you to the page where you could download the blender so that you could fniish installing the nif blender.

So i clicked yes and was brought to the blender page, so i downloaded that and then it installed about 1/2 way then stopped. Another message popped up saying in order for me to run and install blender, I needed a program called python and a message popped up saying if I click yes it will bring me to the page where I could donwload python.

I stopped at this point.

So an overview of this mess:

In order for me to completely install nif Blender, I need a program called blender, and in order for me to completely install blender, I need a program called python.

All this thing was going to do was continue to bring me to page, after page, after page, after page, and continually keep saying in order for me to continue installation I had to go to a new page and download software so the previous installation could finish.

So as I said right from the start, what moron would set something up like this to have people running in circles downloading things for the previous download...

It might seem absurd, but to put it into context, people who have say, windows 98 on an old computer, try to run fallout 3....

they buy the program, then it wont install because it requires more HDD space, so they go out and get a bigger HDD.

then it wont install because it requires a better CPU and more RAM, so they go out and buy that too.

then it wont install because it requires a DVD-rom, so they go out and buy one of those...

then it wont install because it requires windows xp minimum spec, so they go out and buy it...

by this time they are cursing the gods and thinking, why does it require so much work to get a simple game to run?

but, you and I can clearly see that from our point of view, the steps they undertook to get to the end goal were not only well worth it, but necessary, and undertaken by almost everyone else who has played or is now playing the game.

its all just part of the process.

for example, to extract content from a game, sort through it, clean it up, import it and get it running in fallout 3, the following programs/downloads are required:

original game (halo/bf2142/bf2/splintercell etc)

DirectX 9+

.NET Framework

3d ripping software

DDS thumbnail viewer / TGA thumbnail viewer (helps sort textures)

3d package (3dstudioMax, Maya, Blender, Lightwave, Bryce, Modo, Houdini, Gmax for example)

2d package (photoshop, GIMP, Paintshop for example)

NVIDIA DDS plugin for 2d package

NVIDIA texture Tools for 2d package (helps normalize/clean up normals maps if you modify/create them)

NIFTools plugin for 3d package

NifSkope

Fallout Mod Manager (FOMM) (w/ BSA Extractor)

Fallout Skeleton (if you are going to be importing/skinning custom armor or outfits this is reccomended)

GECK

Fallout 3 / Fallout 3 data files

additional/recommended:

Knowledge/Skill with 2d (Photoshop/image manipulation)

Knowledge/Skill with 3d (modelling, skinning/rigging, unwrapping, texturing and shader building)

Knowledge/Skill with programming/coding/scripting (helps figure out Nifskope's inner workings, and creating/modifying/understanding premade Game scripts in the GECK

patience

So as I said right from the start, what moron would set something up like this to have people running in circles downloading things for the previous download...

First of all, be glad that people take time out of their own lives to post things online for us to download. These handy tools/utilities were made for free by volunteers in the community, not just 'some morons' or idiots...

The downloads are likely structured in that fashion to accommodate people who have already downloaded one or more parts of the required setup

ie. if you have blender and python already, you can just grab the latest file.

To package blender, python and Niftools into a single download is not only inadvisable but would also take additional time and effort. Time and effort that can go so easily ignored by angry community goers who want everything on a silver platter :)

Niftools and Python are constantly releasing newer versions, to have an 'all in one' download is not exactly feasible since it would be in constant need of updating every time one of the included components was updated/upgraded.

In regards to your particular case, It does sound a bit fishy like a RUn-around, but unless its back-tracking back to the same downloads in a repetitive loop (asking you to DL the same things again) id just bite the bullet and get it done.

It's absurd that all three programs didn't come in the same download.

That is basically the equivalent to saying 'its absurd that Windows Xp, Direct X9+, Your Video card Drivers, Fallout 3 and the GECK didnt come in one big download' so you can just easily install 1 thing to get the game running.

Blender, Python and Niftools are made by Three completely different groups of people that likely have totally different agendas. Just because these programs happen to rely on one another is not enough reason for the three groups to contact eachother and make a pact to release eachothers software either inclusively or exclusively in a big uber-package download.

None of you are understanding the real problem here.

Going 3 different places to get different parts of the program is not a problem.

The problem is that:

1) You're not told this anywhere and you should be

2) You only find out you need more parts upon installing the 1st part.

If you don't install the NIF Blender you will never know that you need a blender for it. WTF is that BS you do not tell people they need another part of a program by stopping the current install totally then popping up a warning saying this cannot install wihtout a second part and then say it needs a 3rd part upon installing the second part and again having it stop to tell you this.

As I said I stopped downloaing after I got a second message because I had no clue how many more times I was going to have to go through that.

Having it happen 1 time is acceptable, but a second time is an automatic stop because there is no warnings and nothing saying this was going to happen nor is thre anything saying you need more than one part.

There is so much information missing from this that this is far from a good download in fact this is an outright misinformation bottlecap mine explosion

Overall: If you need multiple parts for something then you should be told about this right from the start.

I've installed the Blender Nif plugins and while the installation process was far from stremlined (ie. it stops and tells you to get sutff), it actually worked when I was done which is all I personally care about. This is just the price you pay for using free, open source software - sometimes it takes a bit more patience and know-how getting it running than a retail product which has had millions pumped into it in development expenses. If everything had been packaged into a neat little bundle, you'd have to update that package every time just one aspect was upgraded rather than just linking to the source where the latest version is available.

Ironically it's also the reason a lot of people don't use open source software. The average Joe Schmoe rarely has those attributes in abundance, so it's only persistent or computer knowledgable people that will ever take advantage of it. I'm just happy on behalf of the community that we even have free digital art creation software available. Ironically I don't use open source software much myself because I don't have the patience to relearn everything I already know how to do on retail products. :P

Judging from your original post, you don't even want Blender. Blender is a full-featured 3D program, like Lightwave or 3DS Max. The NIF import/export plugins for Blender are if you HAVE and know how to use Blender (which is a very complicated program), and want to create new meshes or significantly change an existing mesh.

The scripts also require Python and PyFFI.

* Python website where you can download Python.

* Download PyFFI

* Blender website where you can download Blender.

* Download Blender NIF Scripts

http://niftools.sourceforge.net/wiki/Blender

Didn't bother reading through that? Or you just enjoy ranting at people who bring you quality software for free when you can't even read?
