Alternate PipBoy Mesh Possible?

My question is pretty simple: would it be possible to make the PiPboy a handheld device stored on his or her belt rather than tagged onto the wrist of the character?

 

As far as I know, the PiPBoy UI is a set of information stored in .xml format projected from the PiPBoy mesh, so theoretically wouldn't it be possible to replace the PiPBoy mesh with a different one using a different animation set (ie. the character raises a PiPBoy holstered on the belt to the default PiPboy viewing position)?

 

The reason I ask is because the !#¤% wrist PiPBoy ruins part of the armour I'm working on - the lower left arm is used for carrying a small blast shield, doubling as an ammo belt guide. Personally I think it looks great, but if I add this to the armour mesh without having a way of changing how the PiPboy functions, I'll either have to rig the section of the arm to be replaced by the standard PipBoy setup or the PiPBoy will be obscured by the armour mesh (if you want to see this in action, try wearing an unmodified Mysterious Stranger coat - the mesh of the sleeve will obscure your PiPboy UI).
