Geck Assert line 1996 Crash

Recommended Posts

So for some reason i cant really do anything in the geck for fallout 3 (yes its up to date) I have been all over google and forums trying to find a solution but cant seem to find anything.. So my problem is;

1) Editing weapons- no matter what the weapon is when i double click, or right click and select edit the geck pops up the same

(X) Assert

File: C:\projects\fallout3PC\BSShader\BSShaderManager.cpp

Line 1996 [abort] [retry] [ignore]

all of the options crash the geck and it happens no matter how many times i uninstall and re install my game, or geck it just keeps crashing. (oddly enough i can edit armor with zero trouble)

problem 2) it does the exact same thing every time i try to load any location in the render window, interior or exterior the geck pops up that same assert message.

i have plenty of experience with the geck for new vegas, along with the construction and creation kits. i dont really understand why the fallout 3 geck is the only one of these to not work at all. (also im on a laptop)

so if anyone has the slightest clue as to what i could do to fix this any help is appreciated

You install FO3 outside of program files. In it's own folder, like C:/Bethesda. GECK gets installed there as well so it's in the folder with the FO3.exe. Then you run a GECK 1.5 patch on the original GECK install to update it to the 1.5 GECK.

Windows 7's themes and FO3 are not so compatible. The easy way to get around this I found was to use a original windows theme or a XP theme. Even though the newer themes are cooler, I'm too lazy to do it any another way.

i have them both in their own folder outside of the program files, and the geck is in the fallout folder along with the fallout.exe and have ran the update but it still doesnt let me edit any weapons or load any locations into the render window.

and by themes do you mean desktop theme?

oh and i have the goty digital download from steam for FO3

EDIT: i also noticed i can edit weapons in the geck before i load any master files (so just the little dummy tester things like fists) but as soon as i load either a dlc, or fallout itself's master file the very second i try to edit something it pops up that stupid assert message and does the "geck has stopped working windows is looking for a problem". and closes :P litterally i just want to make a few weapons and armor OP and stick them in a box right outside vault 101 like i did in fallout nv, skyrim, marrowin, and oblivion. for some reason it just hates me.

GECK has .ini config files alongside the games .ini, you can delete those geck ones then launch the geck again. You launch GECK then set up the windows sizes an locations. Then hit X to close it, this will be probably the only time the program closes correctly. This way it saves the location of the 3 windows to something you can actually use.

After that launch it, an hit file, pick Fallout3.esm an load it. Hit X when it comes up an see what it does, sometimes it will close, others it hangs or glitches out. It usually takes a long time to close so you can either wait or you can start clicking the render window over an over until Win7 picks up on the issue an prompts to close.

Then just use the GECK a lot, over an over trying to do stuff, but check for windows updates :P. After this you are looking at un-installing the GECK, cleaning the registry, an installing again. Though you don't actually have to clean the reg, it's good practice.

Hey, I hope no one minds me posting in here since it's been awhile, but I was just wondering if you ever found a fix for this problem. I have windows 8.1 and also the steam goty version of the game and I keep running into this issue as well, but not everywhere. Some cell locations I can open whenever, but then others cause this, and the ones that do always do it, like Tranquility Lane. So I was just wondering if you ever found a solid fix for this. Does moving the whole game directory actually work? will it still play properly if I have mod managers installed going to that directory and will it still work through steam? Thank you for any help you can provide.

I am having this issue as well but it happens when I try to view The Mall. I don't understand why I've edited the mall before and now this is happening. I've searched online and seen a lot of people discussing install locations. Don't bother with that. My Install setup is pristine. I do get the message sometimes at other places without the crash. but I am working on a mod that will fortify parts of the wasteland to a certain degree. Please assit in finding a fix.
