Dark Brotherhood Quest not triggering.

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone out there can help me.

I've completed Innocence Lost, and have slept 100 times in inns, player home, you name it. But "With friends like these..." just won't trigger.

I've also tried teleporting to the abandoned shack and manually starting the quest vis setstage 10, but then Astrid wont talk to me - and if I "complete" it using setstage 200 - I cannot get into the sanctuary as the door does not talk o me..

Does anyone know of a way around this?

thou shall not be an assassin!

...

have you tried resetting the quest Innocent Lost? Wacking that old tart to the floor again... or maybe something got broken, maybe try with an old save game and see if that triggers, then think hard about what you've changed...

Skyrim wiki says the following bugs;

Bugs
Any hostages that are spared during the quest remain kneeling with their hood on indefinitely. This bug is fixed by version 1.1 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch.

You may not receive the Mysterious Note after completing Innocence Lost. When encountering a courier, he will simply reply "Nope, sorry. Nothing." This bug is fixed by version 1.3.2 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch.

Sleep right after finishing the Innocence Lost quest (speaking with Aventus Aretino for the second time). This may trigger the Courier's delivery or your awakening inside the shack.

Open the console and type setstage db02 10 to start the quest. Next, enter the command player.moveto 1BDE8. You will be transported inside the shack and the quest should proceed normally.

When you've killed all the captives, you may not be able to interact with Astrid. She will simply just say "Brother" and you can't start a conversation with her. Reloading a previous save is the only known fix.

Sometimes the quest will not start after sleeping.

Yeah, I pretty much tried everything.

Eventually just COC'd to abandoned shack, killed astrid, and destroyed the dark brotherhood. Had to coc into the sanctuary since the door didn't do anything. But at least I've completed the other option of that quest now, I've always joined the Dark Brotherhood, nowe I've destroyed it :p

Pity too, since I met Cicero on the road near Whiterun, His cart had broken down, with the Night-Mother's coffin on the back. He asked for help, helped him. Would have been interesting to see if he remembered that when he enters the DB quest line.

hehe "killed astrid, and destroyed the dark brotherhood."

I always join the dark brotherhood too... never actually thought of killing the astrid and see where that takes me :)... meeting Cicero, I'll kill that guy when I meet him... first time in that quest meeting Cicero I remember myself hoping I would be able to shut him up... and the request was granted! :D

Although this thread hasn't been touched for quite some time, it IS one of the first links that pops up on google while searching for "dark brotherhood not starting".

And since I've finally found a solution for this problem on my mod-heavy playthrough, I thought I'd write down my findings in this central haven of skyrimers to aid future truthseekers.

One of the most common suggestions (that did NOT WORK for me) has been to use the "setstage DB02 10" console command, followed by the "player.additem 0002e3f8 1" command to add the key to the Abandoned Shack, as I could never open a conversation with Astrid to complete the quest after killing one (or all) of the hostages, and also messed up several other things in my playthrough.

However I later found a diffrent setstage command that solved my issue of Courier never arriving to give me the mysterious note and without messing up the game, which I will now explain to the best of my abilities;

Problem: Courier never arrive to give you the Mysterious Note after finishing "Innocence Lost"

Solution:

  1. Open the Console (using the tilde key in game).
  2. Write setstage dbEntranceQuest 20 and press enter.

This made a courier in whiterun shortly run up to me and hand me the note, which allowed me to be abducted when sleeping at the local inn and waking up in the Abandoned Shack.

However;

Problem 2: Astrid not possible to converse with after killing one or all of the hostages, barring the completion of the quest "With friends like these..."

Solution:

  1. Load a save before resting and getting abducted to the Abandoned Shack (like the automatic save made before resting)
  2. Open the Console using the tilde key, in game.
  3. Write stopquest Darkbrotherhood and press enter.
  4. Write resetquest Darkbrotherhood and press enter.

This made the entire "with friends like these..." quest work flawlessly, and I have had no further issues with either the dark brothood questline or with any other.

I hope this helps at least one person googling for a solution to this problem!
