Crashing in intro

Hello everyone, I have been playing a modded Skyrim for months without issue, but as of some recent updates I find myself unable to get past the line "that thief over there", as it always seems to get a CTD right as our old friend Ralof starts to say the line.

Anything that edits/changes NPC stories, speech, text, etc?

You might want to look at those... load order says nothing as nobody will know out of the top of their heads what is what... Just based on the name of the esp files I'd say 'changed syntaxes.esp' or 'Brevi_MoonlightTales.esp' ?

 

Have you tried to disable all your mods except the DLC's and start a new game to see if it's mod related? If you determine it is, then comes the tedious job of enabling/disabling mods to figure out which one...

Have you run BOSS? The thing that jumps out to me in your load order is RLO and COT they are not being loaded correctly. This could easily be your problem. COT gives a link to how it should be loaded. The Highres texture packs should be loaded directly below the last ESM then all RLOs then all COTs then the Unofficial patches and finally StaticMeshImprovements Mod. Then load everything else.

CoT and RLO are loaded exactly as told on the RLO site in his order... I use exactly the same with a few mods in between to alter some things in RLO that I didnt like and it works fine... more even so that CoT and RLO cannot cause CTD in any case, even if you place them all over the place and intentionally try to conflict them as much as possible adding even other lighting mods between it - you will not crash - you will just get strange lighting :wink:

Edit: OK not exactly - his Minor Cities is off (should be 2 up) - but that shouldnt cause any issues. It really doesnt matter too much which order they are in... I have frequently messed them around in my load order and even pulled them apart completely... never had issues with them. Only thing to watch out for is not to load other mods which modify the same thing after it, unless you want that mod to overwrite RLO or CoT in that area (example: I want darker dungeons than RLO offers and some extra shadows in a few interiors so I have a mod to modify dungeon lighting and add a few shadows - which I load AFTER RLO because if I load it before my mod will not work properly).

 

I dont think it's possible to crash your game with lighting mods. Or weather for that matter. Actually these days it's extremely hard to crash your game PURELY mod related when using well made and supported mods (which are not trying to change normal game design like Open Cities). INI tweaks are causing way more issues as are texture sizes.
