Oblivion or Skyrim?

Skyrim only wins in the graphics and combat department. Oblivion wrecks it in everything else. If Oblivion were made today... I can't imagine how gorgeous the Imperial City would be, or the beautiful lush deciduous forests that surround it.

First of all the world was better. Playing any race was acceptable unlike Skyrim. I couldn't play as any other race. The main quest felt out of place if you did. In Fact the main quest felt weird if you played as any other race besides a nord. Everybody says "wah wah oblivion looked the same wherever you went... no variety", that's because they didn't have the technology to make a truly diverse world. Now they do. The Imperial City was incredible. Felt like a real city, different districts, the Arena, tons of people. Solitude was devoid of life. Whiterun felt empty. Every other city was a tiny village.

The non-guild quests were about the same. Skyrim and Oblivion both had really good and mediocre general quests.

The guilds in Oblivion absolutely demolish Skyrim. Why? Because it was more immersive. Some have said "oh well the fighters guild and mages guild were boring", those were my favorite guilds. Why? Because it felt like you were a member. You went from killing a few rats to taking down an entire mercenary organization. Or from getting a staff to killing one of the most powerful necromancers ever. Every guild that you joined, felt like you JUST joined. No instant gratification like Skyrim. You could role-play. It was believable. With Skyrim it is always go to x dungeon and kill/retrieve x item/person. That's what's boring.

Oblivion also gets the nod on the main quest. And my reasoning might surprise you. In Oblivion you could play any race and have it be believable. You were just another person. You made your fame by being the hero of kvatch. In Skyrim you have to play as a Nord. The Dragonborn is supposed to be a Nord. So you are almost forced to play as a Nord. Some mods have fixed this, but it was a poor design flaw. It didn't feel right joining the stormcloaks as a Dark Elf too.

Overall Oblivion had much more memorable quests than Skyrim and I wish it could be recreated with todays technology. And the Arena... Why was there no Arena in Skyrim? That's crazy. Climbing up the ranks in the Oblivion arena was some of the most fun I've had in a video game. Why? Because it felt like I was accomplishing something. That's what it all boils down to. There's no sense of accomplishment in Skyrim. Even killing the Emperor was a let-down.

The only reason people like or don't like those two games is just because they like or don't like. For example, if someone play Oblivion too much ( more than 1 year ), he/she will say it's better than Skyrim. Opposite, someone play Skyrim for more then 1 year, same as the first person view why he/she like Skyrim.

Both games have Medieval style, but I prefer Skyrim because it's brings me joy, and character creation ( with mod ) is more better than those GOD FACES in Oblivion. Beside, it's more beautiful, atmospheric, story is awesome as there is no ENDING ( that's what happened in real life, your life will just not shut down just because you've completed your tasks or quests ). In Oblivion, The armors, weapons look so ugly and... just my opinion ;)

I would LOVE to see Oblivion given the HD treatment and given some of the upgrades, visually and in gameplay, that Skyrim improved upon. Because I WOULD like to see what everyone is raving about without getting 2 hours into it and saying "Screw this, I'm gonna go play Skyrim."

I think the story and immersion in Oblivion is far, far superior to the one of Skyrim. There's no such thing as becoming archmage after like 5 quests, or being promoted to Guildmaster before having actually stole something.

Skyrim did have some memorable characters and stories. But Oblivion itself is a memorable story - not a story of how a divine-blessed dragonblood accomplishes his destiny. The one of a humble hero, who the circumstances pushed to close the maws of Oblivion itself.

The environments in Oblivion were a bit repetitive indeed, but they gave the game a hearty fantasy feel, contrasting with the goreyness of the Sigillis Sanctum. It was much more receptive to roleplay, despite the awkwardness of NPC interactions (who are actually prettier than some of Skyrim's proportion-distorted ones, in some cases.)

I've also noticed that while Skyrim's wilderness is prowling with life and treasure, it's cities seem lifeless, almost empty. Oblivion on the other hand, provided calm travel, with no fear of getting mauled by a sabre cat, and much more lively towns. In that way, That also wins, in my book.

Atmosphere wise, dungeon-delving in IV felt opressive, creepy - it felt more like dungeon crawling than delving. The forts had low roofs, the caves had sinuous corridors, all in almost pitch black darkness. Skyrim's brightly lit caves are a sight to see, but they certainly don't have the same crawling feel to them.

Skyrim wins on UI, combat mechanics, graphics, lively outdoors, environment design, lighting atmosphere, NPC interactions (...)

Oblivion wins on story, lively towns, dungeons, (certain) game mechanics, story, roleplay (...)

They both have good and bad sides, and I still can't quite say which one is my definite favorite, but...

The only reason I say that 2 hours in is BECAUSE of the terrible graphics and combat.

^ Pretty much that.

But yeah, in the next installation (NOT ES Online, because screw that noise), I hope they manage to take the best of Oblivion and the best of Skyrim and put it into one AMAZING package.

Oblivion, quests were more interesting and had variety while skyrim most quests are go in kill this fetch that and come back, not to mention the main quests of guilds and dragonborn main quest were a joke in terms of size, companions main questline is like 4 quests -.- not much is explained things are that way just because. Oblivion had also different environments not to mention mods to add other provinces and my mod that enhances caves x) Skyrim is all snow and gets really boring to travel on it, Bethesda had a great chance to make something different with expansions like making an expansion in hammerfell to contrast skyrim snowy landscape but no.... Dawnguard was the best thing for skyrim in my opinion, quests were well done and felt complete and much better than all skyrim´s quests combined (can´t talk about dark brotherhood or thieves guild because I haven´t played them but I don´t have much hope after the companions and the college) The hearthfire DLC ... why the hell was that considered a DLC -.- Dragonborn had the potential to be the greatest expansion but when I started to get into it and exicted about the main quest asking oooh what´s next? I must find the books? or what? Miraak dies .... In terms of graphics skyrim is better but oblivion with mods can be close to skyrim, the only thing oblivion needs is dynamic shadows.

But anyway I love elder scrolls ever since morrowind, despite my complaints about skyrim I still love to mod it and play it, but I prefer oblivion, in fact I prefer morrowind but since I play morrowind in oblivion it´s just two in one XD
