I have never had an issue with it before, despite the mods I have run in the past. I haven't played this game since before the latest patch and I did install new mods today. I am currently checking them to see if one of them caused this crash for me. If this bug crops up on a vanilla install I'd like to know that myself. Hopefully someone can help us out schmenge. Update: The game crashed when I used the console to start the quest, even before I went to Whiterun and saw the NPC's for the first time. I started a brand new character and forced the quest to start with the console again and it did not crash. I spawned in a generic redguard warrior and it allowed me to continue the quest as normal. So I'm going to guess my save file got corrupted. If you don't see another update from me it means my next character made it through and got the quest without crashing. If that is the case, all I can suggest, sadly, is to either start a new game or fast-travel to the palace and walk around town from there while avoiding getting too close to the NPC's. at the front gate.
