Can't start a new game (non modded game, ultimate edition)

Just as the title says: I can't start a new game. After the first loading screen it crashes. I just got this game yesterday, and haven't been able to play at all! I have Windows 7, and have tried compatibility modes and starting the game with admin privileges. I have the game downloaded from steam. At first I tried the game with some mods, and got the ctd at new game. Thinking it was the mods, I uninstalled the game and deleted all files that anything to do with it. However, re-unloading all the files through Steam and reinstalling the game, without mods, doesn't help at all. I still can't play...

Thanks for any help.

What are your PC specs?

And validate the cache in steam. Right click-> properties-> data-> validate integrity of game cache.

Check where youre installing it too, should be in your steamapps/common folder.

Okay, here we go!

PC specs:

  • CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965
  • 8GB Ram
  • Graphics:1024MB AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series
  • Windows 7

Things I've tried:

  • Validating cache
  • Deleting all .ini files -> validating cache
  • Deleting all files and redownloading
  • Ini tweaking:
    • changing bUseThreadedAI= from 0 to 1
    • adding iNumHWThreads=2, also tried changing to 1
  • running as admin
  • compatibility modes
    • XP service pack 3 -> game freezes while starting, before menu screen
    • Win 7 -> ctd when loading menu
    • no compatibility mode -> ctd in first loading screen when starting new game

The game is installed where it should be, in steamapps/common

I'm about to give up... The worst thing is, Fallout 3 works for me and I was eager to play New Vegas after getting it as a birthday present... Well, back to other games I guess :(

Thanks for the link, that was just what I needed! The problem was a missing d3d9.dll file, which I now remember I also needed to get Fallout 3 working. I copied it from my Fallout 3 folder to NV's folder and now I can start a new game!
